MRDOCA, make sure there are no extra USB keys inserted when you're booting, I still get that if I leave anything plugged in. Other than that, I can't think of anything, I couldn't get the 256 to boot any Linux, then I put the same HDD into my 16mb and it booted first time (didn't have to re-install either). Maybe try install the BootOS from George's first post on your slim, along with lv2-v9 and plug in your external that has Linux installed. If it works, you know it's down to hardware revisions (although I think you've gotta unplug USB for them too).

Cbrown87, have you extracted the 2 .deb files and installed them using Terminal? Click where I wrote "update" to download it, then extract them (copy to ps3 folder or Home folder) and use the dpkg command on both to install them from Terminal (without the bit in Red if they're in Ps3 folder), then you edit the kboot to point to them in the "/boot" folder (after installing them).

If you want, upload your kboot file and we'll have a look at it. You need to have those .debs installed first for it to work though.

flo, I imagine it might be too small, might aswell try something bigger if you can, I just hooked up an old 80gb 3.5" drive which works fine. Make sure to format it and give it one full partition too, I'm not that sure it's why you crash at 83% though, but it'd make sense if it's full.

@ everyone: Get an externally powered USB hub, so handy when we've only 2 ports!
oralphie: Will this allow chuck norris to play backups??? PLZ HELP!!!

Cheers Mistawes, got it all going ok an booting grafs one,
    i ended up using:
    {graf='/boot/vmlinux-2.6.38-graf-8e49063 initrid=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-graf-8e49063 root=/dev/sda1 quiet video=ps3fb:mode:8 root=/dev/sda' }

No, there is no official flash for PowerPC Linux. Adobe simply refuses to make it!

    whats up?
I had the same problem. I corrected the ARG path in petitboot and Ubuntu loaded. You will see a sda1 or sda2 (not sure off hand) when everthing else is the opposite. Go to you linux entry in petitboot and hit e and edit the ARG path to be correct. My problem though is after doing so I was able to log in, but no desktop after loads. I end up getting a gnome applet error. I can still access the shell though.

Look into gnash. It is the flash alternative. We used to have to use it before when we had official otheros support

Very nice BobbyBlunt, got my 256mb working by changing the ARG from sda1 to sdd1. Booted up properly, everything's working fine!

FWIW, it's specific to whatever kernel you wanna load, so change the one you're going to select for boot, don't edit "old" and boot "linux" or it won't work, if ya get me.

    Thanks Bobby!

If anyone's interested, I have successfully compiled and run Mplayer on the PS3, using the Ubuntu version linked in the first post:

I have tested it with up to 720p. 480p and below xvid and h264 works fine, including subtitles, sound etc, though does not fullscreen properly (the video size remains the same, but the rest of the screen becomes black. 720p plays, but not well, and isn't watchable.

I have uploaded the .deb here: mplayer_1.0git_powerpc.deb . It is based on Uoti's Mplayer git repo, found here: Public Git Hosting - mplayer-build.git/summary .

If you wish to compile it yourself, you will need to 'apt-get build-dep mplayer ffmpeg', and also 'apt-get install autoconf', then use the instructions found here: LinuxTECH.NET - Tips+Tricks - How To Build Uoti's git MPlayer Branch . You will also need to edit one script - in the script/ directory, open ffmpeg-config, and look for '--cpu=host'. Change this to '--cpu=ppc', or the configuration and thus compilation will fail.

It is not yet perfect, but hopefully will get better as development continues.

Damm, i feel really dumb right now.
Remember, people, the USB trick doesn't work alone. You gotta use the usb trick AND use the alternate version of ubuntu!

Looks good formenos! i'll give it a go in a few. Which brings me to another point.. how come i can't get anything to run on vlc player? on my pc with ubuntu i can run everything, but on ps3 ubuntu i can't get anything at all to play no matter what codecs i install.

Also gnash is garbage and don't bother with it. 99% of the time it doesn't work. Same with lightspark. I found another adobe flash replacement the other day but couldn't get it to run.

A good youtube alternative that doesn't use flash is minitube. I had that up and running when i had the old ubuntu img files on my ps3. But now for some reason it doesn't work at all also get fatal error and video wont load.
