BD Movie play possible with "other OS"?

I posted this in the general discussion section and got no replies so I thought I would try here.
For those of us apart of the BD movie play prohibited due to downgrading and remarrying club would it be possible to play a BD movie in the "Other OS"? I saw on a ubuntu help site that you could get BD movies to play on a PS3 through the other OS however it was unclear as to if it was possible if you have lost BD play back from the XMB.

Also if this is possible then "Other OS" could be a key in the mystery of getting BD play back once its lost from downgrading etc.

Ubuntu is a slow piece of crap for pre-jailbreak and jailbroken consoles. It's just too damned bloated. Try Yellow Dog and you'll be amazed at the speed difference. Ubuntu is too bloated to play Bluray movies without skipping and stuttering. Yellow Dog plays them just fine. I don't know if they will play with your specific situation though.

Thanks man! can you PM me what version of yellow dog I need for a 60 gig cecha01 NTSC system and where I can obtain it?

The latest version of YDL is 6.2, but it's missing from the official page along with the PPC (PS3) version. You can download it below. Note that Bluray playback needs to be setup manually and doesn't work right out of the box.

You can get 6.2 below.

Has YLD been updated with all Gitbrew/graf's current kernal/drivers to get the most out of OtherOS++/Linux?

I had a very bad experience with YDL 6.2 and BootOS . I did not succeed to update it with newer kernels and speedups . I was slow as hell .
When i switched to OtherOs++ and Red Ribbon i was amazed .

IMO , only an YDL updated with all the novelties in kernel and speed hacks can overcome Red Ribbon .

No way. The YDL Team is close with Sony and a "professional" company with a really slick Linux distro. I have 3.15 (phat/256mb/stock) and use the Loader that came on the disk and it's the 2nd fastest Linux distro I've used on the PS3 - the first being Red Ribbon. The 256mb memory speeds things up. I'd never run YDL on something with less. I hope this good old "phat" lasts.

brakk3n, I've seen serveral of your post so I know your on a Phat w/ofw 3.15; but would you happen to know of any current install guides for Red Ribbon or YDL. I'm eager to try something and the most comprehensive thing I found was for a Unbuntu install.

Installing Red Ribbon is cake! All you do is install two packages. Let me lay it down for you.

You will need:

(1) BootOS or OtherOS++
OtherOS++ is some complicated shit for newbs so we went with the two step install BootOS option.

(2) Get these two files: bootos-v3.0-petitboot.pkg & lv2_v9.pkg
As the name implies BootOS has been modified to include Petitboot a simple boot manager.

(3) Download and and get Red Ribbon on some sort of media (thumb drive / disc)

(4) External USB Drive with space for two Linux Partitions (main / swap). We used a "game" HDD and we manually partitioned it with no problems; just took a while (ala usb)!

(5) Install "bootos-v3.0-petitboot.pkg" . It creates an installer under your games bar. Run the installer. Delete the installer once it's one.

(6) Install "lv2_v9.pkg". This is what you run to boot into petitboot.

(7) Plug in the USB drive, a keyboard, mouse and insert the Red Ribbon Disc.

(8) Launch "lv2_v9.pkg" use your gamepad to launch it (if you use your keyboard you won't be able to select the next step).

(9) Select the last option; the one that says "Linux" with the gamepad. You do not need the gamepad anymore.

(10) Petitboot with load and allow you to select (with the keyboard) which Linux to run. You can run the LiveCD which is slow or install it. Or you could run the LiveCD, check it out and install it. Note it installs on the external drive and it won't even let you touch the PS3OS space so it's not that good for hard core hack0rs.

Once installed to launch it you do this.

(1) Turn on PS3
(2) Launch the lv2 app
(3) Pick Linux
(4) Pick Red Ribbon OtherOS to boot and wait about 10 seconds for it to boot up :)

It takes longer to get to the damn boot selector then it does to boot it. LOL.

This is all from notes I wrote down so I hope I didn't get anything wrong. I'm not sure if I can upload those files so I will be safe and you know how to find them.

The Red Ribbon site has more info about installing, but what I wrote is what we did and it worked out great.

TO INSTALL YELLOW DOG LINUX - Run it's installer the same way you run Red Ribbon. YDL has an issue with KDE not wanting to work and it's slower then Red Ribbon. However, Red Ribbon is Debian based so you won't find certain things in Red Ribbon that you will find in YDL. Both Package Managers are fully functional, but YDL has all the emulators. I run YDL and have Zerogame installed, however I use my XBOX for emulators. Until some LIB's are made to use the RSX I doubt you'll find any emulator worth using as they are all slow as hell.
