We report before about the unfinished version, now kmeaw, with collaboration from kha0S has released the all new asbestOS Installer for your penguin lovers. As graf_chokolo is under Sony’s watch, this is the best Linux on PS3 we can get so far.

    Well folks, it’s done!

I’ve been working with kmeaw last couple of weeks in asbestOS v2.0. This release is easyer to use, and eases the installation of Debian GNU/Linux in your PS3. Right now, it’s the best way to overcome the loss of OtherOS feature.

    Hope everyone enjoys it!

We have made some videos! See the asbestOS v2.0 video walkthrough

For the release notes you may want to take note:

    - This tool installs AsbestOS, which can be used to boot Linux kernel from lv2patcher v9.

    - v2.0 is made by kmeaw and kha0S.

    - It allows you to install unmodified Debian Squeeze.

    - Full support to installation on External Hard Drive/Pen Drive. No PS3 disk installation for now.

    - All needed PS3 specific kernel modules are already pre-compiled and installed.

    - PS3 vram is enabled as swap as default

    - Thanks to marcan for AsbestOS, Mathieulh and graf_chokolo for default.spp trick, geohot for dev_flash mount code.

    - Thanks to jbc for testing and KingDong for the icon

    - Now it works for fat ps3

    Asbestos Installer v2.0

    Rep +++++ kmeaw and ps3crunch!

This is in fact my first installation of Linux on PS3 Slim with Asbestos 2.01 installer, which is called BootOS now.

The installation worked fine, no errors on WD 160GB passport.
    I followed the youtube vids tutorial (12 movies): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKAnIFXqmTE&feature=related]YouTube - Debian: 01/12: GameOS[/ame]

However I noticed when using the gnome desktop it runs very slow and non-responsive.

Is that normal when running Linux on PS3 or am I missing something?

Installed LXDE but it's not really faster
I also did the Using PS3 VRAM as SWAP trick, I think.

The /etc/rc.local was already pre-modified containing the lines needed.

But how can I verify that the "Using PS3 VRAM as SWAP" is in fact working correctly?

    I'm using Debian 6 on PS3

UPDATE: When running /sbin/swapon -s ... I saw the swap VRAM listed as /dev/ps3vram and in use (+/-250MB)

It depends on the USB-Stick or the External-Harddrive, you are working with.

I tested the transfer-speed of 6 different devices i have and they are really much different. The name of the freeware-tool to test the transfer-speed is "h2testw".

    ----------------------Writing Speed(MByte/s)-----Reading Speed(MByte/s)

    USB-SD-Adapter---------------6,37----------------------17,1
    Cruzer-USB-Stick--------------6,6------------------------24,7
    Kingston Data Traveler---------2,12----------------------6,15
    Transcend-USB-Stick----------5,89----------------------17,5
    Sharkoon-External-HD (Sata)---20,1----------------------27,0
    Samsung-External-HD (IDE)-----19,3----------------------22,1

And if you dont have a "speedy" device and want to have a really fast USB-Stick for Asbestos, you can buy the "Corsair Voyager GT".
    Corsair Voyager GT-------------20,0----------------------30,0
