Hello everyone. I was sporting OFW on my PS3 slim until I thought it was time to explore the possibilities of CFW (3.55 kmeaw). However, that came at the sacrifice of using PSN. I recently purchased another PS3 (CECHA01) for a steal and decided that I wanted to use THAT one for my hombrew/hacking needs and subsequently upgrade my slim to OFW to access PSN. The thing is that the fat PS3 is still running 2.42 OFW, and while I'm not entirely sure of what I can do with OtherOS, I've been advised to refrain from upgrading it past the point of no return.

What I wanted to ask everyone is what exactly can I do with the OtherOS feature? Is it really worth staying at a lower firmware? Additionally, how would I be able to transfer all of the data stored on my slim's HDD (including savedata and backups) to my fat's HDD (which I've replaced with a 500 GB drive) without having to rip everything all over again? Does CFW outperform the capabilities of OtherOS? Is it possible to have both at the same time? Thank you all very much for your input.

No, you can get linux on 3.55, and it'll even work better than installing via official means.

Also, the only point of no return is 3.56. If you are on 3.55 or lower, you can downgrade all the way to 1.00.

You can upgrade you phat ps3 to 3.55 then data transfer from your slim to phat then install CFW and OtherOS++

Am I right in getting the impression that you do not know what OtherOS is?
If so, don't worry about it. Update that sucker to 3.55 OFW then stick Kmeaw CFW on it and start learning more about Linux.

As ahou stated, DO NOT update past 3.55 or you will not be able to run CFW on it.
I would much rather go to my grave not needing my gun, than go there wishing I had it.

So you're saying I should update my phat to 3.55 OFW first before transferring instead of updating it to 3.55 kmeaw? Or should I update my phat to 3.55 kmeaw and THEN transfer my data? Additionally, how exactly would I do that? Is it as easy as running the backup utility on my slim and restoring the data on my phat, or is there a special process I have to follow? I'm asking because I don't know if all of my backups and subdata accessible on my slim will transfer over to my phat running OFW since you don't normally have access to those directories while running OFW.

Yeah, I never really cared about it since my slim didn't have the feature upon purchase, but I'm curious as to what ELSE I can do with the feature enabled. On top of that, I've never used Linux in my life, so I've no idea as to what it is or how it runs. All I know is that it's another OS. If I CAN indeed re-enable it on 3.55 kmeaw, then I guess it's worth looking into.

Thank you to everyone for replying!

Installing 3.55 kmeaw isn't working for me. I've been searching everywhere to find a solution to access the recovery menu on my CECHA01 model (since installing it through the XMB tells me that I'm already running the latest firmware), but I've not had any luck. Everyone tells me to just hold my finger on the power button and wait to hear one beep followed by two quick beeps, but my system just shuts down.

What am I supposed to do from here? Should I have upgraded to an OFW lower than 3.55, and then installed the prepatched 3.55 kmeaw? My phat is currently running 3.55 OFW.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First you upgrade to OFW3.55 do the necessary data transfer then go to CFW3.55 Kmeaw.

You hold your finger on the power button until the machine switches off (you will hear a few beeps), then again hold the power button down and wait till you hear two consecutive beeps and quickly release the button. Your machine should ask you to plug in your controller USB wire and you are good to go. System update. And be careful some of the options in the recovery menu will format your HDD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2YnG...eature=related

You said "because I don't know if all of my backups and subdata accessible on my slim will transfer over to my phat" If you back up a PS3 using CFW all you game back ups and homebrew will be backed up too.

So what you're saying is that I can't do the first shutdown of the phat PS3 system via controller, correct? The machine needs to be on, and then powered down via the button on the console itself.

Additionally, am I to remove all devices connected to the console through the USB hub? I'd watch the video, but I'm at work and my computer blocks youtube.

No. First you power down the PS3 if it's on, doesn't matter how you do that.

With the PS3 in standby you follow the steps that someone wrote above.

Yeah, that's what hasn't been working for me...this is what I'm doing:

    1) I turn my PS3 on.
    2) I shut my PS3 down.
    3) While my PS3 is in standby mode, I place my finger on the power button; I immediately hear a single beep; the console powers on.
    4) While my finger is still pressed on the power button, a few seconds pass before I hear another SINGLE beep.

At this point, I've done one of two things

    1) Take my finger off of the power button
    2) Keep my finger pressed on the power button.

After step 4, if I take my finger off of the power button after hearing the second SINGLE beep (which I know is supposed to be two quick beeps), the console simply resets my video settings.

After step 4, if I I keep my finger pressed on the power button, my console simple reenters standby mode.

I know that I'm listening for two consecutive beeps (as was the case when I installed 3.55 kmeaw on my slim console), but, as mentioned above, I only hear a second single beep a few seconds after keeping my finger pressed on the power button.

How am I supposed to install 3.55 kmeaw on my phat CECHA01 if I'm unable to enter recovery mode?
