If you've been following the twitter drama between Mathieulh and Waninkoko, i'm sure you already know that there is a better way to run backups than the ones we are currently using. So, let's use this thread to discuss it!

EDIT for those who don't know what i'm referring to

    On Tuesday 18th January 2011, @Mathieulh said:

@hackinblack although patching lv2 is stupid in the first place, you don't even need that for piracy, which seems to be the purpose for your firmware.
    On Tuesday 18th January 2011, @Mathieulh said:

@hackinblack if you want backups that much, the safest way to it is to implement a dynamic ps3 binary patcher into a BM, and sign it. Then you can run this on top of any untouched lv2.
    On Tuesday 18th January 2011, @Mathieulh said:

@hackinblack after you do that, I am quite sure you will have all of the warez kiddies worshipping you like there is no tomorrow. Not to mention the compatibility rate would be higher. I am not helping you doing that however.

Mathieulh the legendary hacker has revealed within his tweets too Waninkoko that there are other ways to play your so called legally backed up PS3 games on your console without having to port PL3 to new firmware versions.

    He mentioned that his Method will increase the Percentage of compatibility, the name of his 'New' method is called Dynamic PS3 binary patcher the legendary Hacker says more in his tweets;

@hackinblack although patching lv2 is stupid in the first place, you don’t even need that for piracy, which seems to be the purpose for your firmware.
@hackinblack not to mention you don’t need to patch lv2 to play backups. You can patch the binaries paths and sign them on the fly.
@hackinblack if you want backups that much, the safest way to it is to implement a dynamic ps3 binary patcher into a BM, and sign it. Then you can run this on top of any untouched lv2.
@hackinblack after you do that, I am quite sure you will have all of the warez kiddies worshipping you like there is no tomorrow. Not to mention the compatibility rate would be higher. I am not helping you doing that however

i dunno why every little convo, that people have on IRC, people come here and try to post it as news
    thanks for moving this, mods

    now back on topic.
this is really a good suggestion by math, lets hope the devs will try other alternatives
    lv2 patching seems really risky

Why is something like this posted, like if it where a news worth?
Every human with a common knowledge of PC-Similar and programmable hardware knows, that an executable file can be patched in RAM, instead of statically, directly and manually.

'Mathieulh the legendary hacker has revealed'...
Darn,... You don't need to be a legendary uber-hacker, to 'reveal' something like this.

Well but i guess or french friend is right - if someone implent this into a backup manager, his name would be immortal...

But i'm wondering, how Mathieulh has the time to look after such things - besides inventing the wheel and discovering america

And it should be main-page news, because focusing on this implementation would stop a lot of people from modding fw and (mostly other people) from flashing their ps3 to death

Of course he knows a way how to do it ... and of course he's not going to tell anyone.

If it is common knowledge and quite simple, why is there no backup manager with on the fly pachting out there ?

There are many famous examples in other 'console-scene-parts', where methods like this are implemented.
Just one example FMCB and the hacked OSD.
It patches the OSDSYS in RAM and also the 'OSD-Mod-Subroutine' of FMCB also supports multiple versions of OSDSYS.

To be honest about the backup-managers,...
They are not even one fifth as complex as a game-loader on PS2 for example...

Why? Because they more 're-map' the device-path (linux-like) and do not write a complete homebrew-/replacement-cdvd-driver for a specific device.

...and I simply think, that a few developers simply didn't had the idea and someone needs to point them at 'how-to'... These backup-managers are more a rip-off of each other to me, than they were on the PS2, where really every project is a custom one (beside HDA/HDL and USBA/USBE).

Now let's see who implements it first into it's BM and thanks Mathieul for the uber-genius idea of patching a file in RAM, instead of statically.

Nothing against him. I guess he do not even intend something like this to be posted as a main-page-news somewhere, but those people which see a new uber-hack in every single Bit someone changes somewhere,... It is getting annoying simply. Those noobs should grab some more common knowledge (and also spread it of course), instead of linking a person with something as something super-new where a big basis/crowd knows, it isn't... It's more a damage to his name would I say.
