I was backing up a game and at 50% I hear a beep then red light starts to blink hit the power button green light followed by yellow then a constant red blinking? it's a 60g launch model... I did have this problem 3 weeks ago but it was running fine til yesterday... I've used gilksy's method 3 times today and still the ylod. is it worth sending to sony I really don't want to loose b/c I still have ps1 games and the 4 usb ports... any suggestions on what to do?

Get a fan on the console. The HDD is heating up the internal when you put it under load.

Best thing to do is re aply themal paste (artic silver 5) every 6 months or so once your is around 1 year old. have been doing this with my pal phat 60gig and it has been perfect whilst all my friends have died due to overheating.
Even without seeing your console Im 95% its dead!
sorry dude, time for a new one

Sony could easily update it while repairing, also they charge near enough to the price of another one for repair. I'd repair it myself. sell it and look for a replacement Slim. With a slim it won't die and you can get a PS1 or PS2 for nothing these days and will save running a much more powerful console for no reason. Oh, and maybe get a USB hub if ports are a problem.
Make sure to use flux and don't touch the board after reflowing for atleast 30 minutes. Also, your heat source might not be getting hot enough when trying to reflow. If you haven't got a pre-heater then you need to reflow both sides of the board, 15 seconds per part (GPU, CPU, Ram etc).

so is YLOD similar to RROD repair? my orig fat Ps3 has never broken, but to be honest i seldom use ps3, ive bought a brand new 320 slim ive had for 6 weeks to, still in the box! i just cant ween myself of my my 360 (i prefer the controller) and my gaming rig.
i love the Ps3 and respect it hugely, but sony dont use it to full potentail. but if the scene had full accses to it imagine what i could do!

^^^ Nope, 2 completely different things. RSOD is software related, YLOD is hardware related. Both just mean your PS3 won't turn on.
YLOD = RROD. RSOD seems like a corrupt Nand which is fatal on Jtags (had 2 brick on me).

if I told them that I dont use it for the psn do you think they will keep my firmware where it's at? that is the main thing I'm worried about sending it in I dont want them updating it plus I have a disc still in there... oh and I have a heat gun goes up to 1121 Fahrenheit do I need more?
