XiaNaiX days old timer looking to finally move into PS3 territory, and could really use some advice

Howzit going guys?

I'm a super old timer, and for the past few years i've been over on the Green side of things. I'm coming back to PSX to try to actually use my 60gb BC PS3. I stopped using it because of the removal of OtherOS.


My goals are probably pretty similar to everyone else:

1. Have the ability to use OtherOS again
2. Be able to play the latest games without losing features
3. Play backups of my 7 legally owned games so i don't need to take them out of the case on my shelf
4. Access PSN for online play, if possible.

I'm seeing all sorts of crazy information out there, and as usual, forums are a great way to spread information, both good and bad.

it appears like the current way for me to get most of my goals is to get a True Blue dongle, but i'd also like to know what my best CFW Options are.....something that gets me the most possible goals.

I greatly appreciate any and all assistance and opinions for this.

First off, let me give some answers to your goals/questions.

1- Possible with the tools found at Gitbrew.org(gititbit) and Rebug.me, both links can be found in my sig
2- TB lets you play some of the newer games, but not all of them. Also, you can not use the latest updates for the games sometimes, as if causes an error I assume.
3- Easy, you can do that with the mmCM/multiMAN tool, or even Rogero Manager
4- This can be done with the use of a hardware flasher, ProgSkeet(.com) and E3 Flasher(e3-tech.net)

Now as for CFW options, Kmeaw is the standard. Rogero has one that should be used for downgrading with ProgSkeet and E3 Flasher. Other than that, you are getting into MFW territory, things like Ultimate CFW and Newbie Friendly Ware. TB actually comes with it's own CFW. As for best backup support, it seems Corba-USB can handle any backup you throw at it. Cobra makes their own CFW too, but their is also an NFW(MFW) version of it as well.

PS, I do not know who killed your saturn sigs, but I got a good guess

EDIT - Be sure to check out the Contest! link, it has a great tutorial from Shaitan about easily swapping between CFWs, so you can have it set up Kmeaw, TB, Cobra, Rebug, and OtherOS++ for instance.

Also, I hope your PS3 is not higher than 3.55, or you will need to start of with a hardware flasher right away. The scene right now is basically 3.41-3.55. 4.10 you can access PSN but no CFW; that is to say, not until you downgrade.

Thanks for the fast response, and congrats on making mod. I had no idea XiaNaiX left. of course, i really haven't been around seriously since before the PS3 launch!

Okay, so as a start i should find an instruction set and package for installation of Kmeaw, and do some research on MFW like Ultimate CFW and NFW.

The newest PS3 game i have is Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, which came out this past week. As long as it plays okay on the system i'll be happy for now.

Last I checke one of them was still live. As for NFW, you can look in my sig. Ultimate CFW is somewhere around here, RazorX makes it, so that might help your search. Also, bitsbubba makes NFW, he's around here, too.

TB and Paradox are releasing game patches, but only for certain games, and I am not sure if that is one of them, or if they will be able to patch it any time in the near future. But most likely, it will want you to upgrade to a newer firmware to play THAT game.

Also, after you install CFW, make sure to install the spoofer from Rebug.me, or the latest one on the front page. You do not want to accidentally update the system.

Okay cool, i was on the right path then. already downloaded the Kmeaw + OFW pack.

a wiki or chart showing the different features/benefits would be really helpful here, but i'll look the others up tomorrow.

As for Hyperdimension, i just hope the original plays for right now. I talked to the tech support over at NIS and they are claiming that it might try to do an update, which is what led me here today.

I doubt XiaNaiX would remember me at all, lol. i credit his old site for getting me in to hacking Gamesharks into Caetla carts.

Yeah, everyone nowadays puts the latest updates on their discs. Nintendo, Microsoft, and even Sony.

Basically, when you put the disc in it will try to get you to upgrade to whatever is on the disc. A spoofer is a preventive measure against this.

But take a look at truebluejb2.com and check out their game patch section, or check out the list over at PS3SceneFiles.com, the latter might be the most current.

I just bought Tekken Hybrid, and am thinking it might be time to pick up a TB

I know that on the wii, you can prevent the updates via mod. on Xbox, if you don't update, you can't sign into XBL. on sony however, i've heard that no update = no play at all, something that's a bit hard for me to swallow.

The Wii is great. You can update, and in just a couple seconds flash back to the mods via BootMii.

Sweet! I get my controller later this evening. i can't wait to try this out.

Can i ask, do you know if there is any benefit for me choosing Ultimate vs NFW or Kmeaw? I've got the Kmeaw, but my system tweaking days are done, and i feel like i've joined the newb collective, wanting the most i can get out of my mod with the least amount of maintenance :-)
