Huh? 20 dollars is a turn off. I can get surge suppressor which I have for about 5 dollars. Its cool but 20 dollars just for this ? No thanks.
another gimmick device. powerbar is big and messy though - rite? people want a slick clean setup.
Personally I prefer a remote timer like those used for outdoor lights. they are about $20, you hit a button and powers disconnected. hit it again and power reconnected. without getting up. woot. even works with the harmony remotes too!, throw in the cheapie hip-gear 'remote' dongle and its a great combination! may take some creative thinking to expose the IR sensor to your line of sight tho.
hell, if your handy:
httxp://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/IR_Remote_Switch_Circuit.asp
not sure how it would be triggered - like if you turn the volume up if the PS3 would shut off.. 'any' IR blast is too vague.
with the components I don't think they will remember anything. Basically have to add an IR identifier with a push button, so you press the button and then send IR command and the unit remembers it.
httxp://www.instructables.com/id/Universal-IR-Remote-Switch/step12/Final-Product/ I think could be adapted.
Seems the SIS-1 chip is obsolete, and SIS-2 replaces it for $13 at the simerec site. They have SIS-2 and IR receiver for $13US.. this recognizes most IR remotes, and is programmable. their site at simerec has a schematic there as well, which looks a bit easier. by the time you actually get the relay and other misc components, and construct it - the $20 walmart special I think is a better choice.
I only got a 12F629 and 16F88 kicking around tho.. wonder if theres a PIC program that does the same thing?

Or, you could do it the easy way and just get one of these for about $5 US:
240v version

110v version
http://www.***********.com/details.dx/sku.13147
These can learn remote commands.
They don't even need line-of-sight either, I have mine at the back of the entertainment unit and it switches on and off if I point it at the wall.
you trust a device like that from dealxtreme? there are some things that are okay to buy from a site like that, and there are others that are not okay. things that are pulling that kind of voltage attached to a device that worth more then $50 is asking for trouble.
anyways, ill say it again... the best thing you could have for the slims related to the jailbreak hack is a simple relay circuit with a ribbon cable running to the front with a smaller switch....
Home Depot or Lowes sells a wall switch for $5.
why bother?
leave your dongle in the console
then switch the mains on (to your tv, ps3, etc)
same thing
this is stupid...
are people really gettin that lazy that they cant unplug a power cable these days!
you should have seen the shit i had to go thru to boot ps2 games! or even ps1 games back in the day!
a remote switch is pointless, are you forgetting the eject button on turn on![]()
