So I've had experience with homebrew on the Xbox1, PS2, PSP, DS and Wii, but when I got my PS3, there was talk of it being uncrackable and such, so I didn't really bother following any developments on sites like this.

But now, everyone's talking about keys and Geohot, and this has me interested. I remember something about USB sticks a while back but didn't bother because they were banned in my country.

So as of now, what can I do to my PS3, with or without specific hardware? How developed is the homebrew?

We're in a really awkward place between the USB hack and proper CFW, I'd suggest waiting it out a few more weeks to see where it all goes.

Most homebrew is just backup managers and emulators right now, a few simple homebrew games but nothing spectacular.

At least I got a proper response before the "Google it" post came in. Especially when the "search it" comments don't really work for my question, as I said I don't know much about the history of PS3 homebrew, and I don't know of the relation between those USB "jailbreak" sticks and Geohotz' "jailbreak" (why is every hack or crack now called "jailbreak"?)

I click on the "Open source jailbreak" board and there's stickies involving calculators. I think when there are stickies like that, then the boards aren't very helpful, and confusing to a newb like me.

there is just too much to explain.. we can't narrow months of information into one sentence lol.. i'll sugest just try reading.. f.a.q'z and guides relating to what you do have.. for example: a ps3/correct firmware/etc.. that is what the search function was made for its really simple actually

Basically, if you are on 3.41 you can use a 'Jailbreak dongle' and run unsigned homebrew, backup managers etc.

If you are on 3.55 you can install Geohot's 3.55 'jailbreak' MFW which gives you the option to install signed homebrew using .pkg files. You can't run backups using the backup managers that run on 3.41 using the jailbreak dongles, but you can run a lot of backups using the modified eboot .pkg file method, which basically allows you to install a backup on your HDD and run it as a PSN game through the XMB. Not all games are compatible, but it's getting better as people find new ways of getting them working.

i'll also add that it's possible to run the games from usb/ext hdd aswell

if you want to know more about this look it up.. you'll understand more about eboots/pkgs etc in no time..
