Is it worth to jailbreak the ps3?
Is it worth to jailbreak the ps3? –

Sorry Im new to this and Im not sure if I should jailbreak my ps3 because I dont know the pros and cons. Or if it is the right move for me because I have legit games on ps3 and dont plan on backups and I do use the psn to get DLC and updates. But I would like to jailbreak the ps3 to play ps2 and ps1 backed up games. Can someone please clarify my questions because I am only hearing about this from a friend so I am not sure if its true or not. Anyway my ps1 console that was modded broke and I modded my ps2 to play the backed up ps1 games, but it only plays half my discs because the laser is weak so a friend told me that I should jailbreak my ps3 to play these backed up games. Is this true can it do that?
Also if I jailbreak it a friend told me that I cant play online or use psn to get DLC. I dont plan on cheating or modifying games for the ps3 I just want to get the updates and DLC for the game content. Is it safe to do this?
Also I dont want to play my somewhat 60 ps1 and ps2 games from scratch I have the gamedata saved on memory cards. Is there a way I can transfer the data from my memory card to the ps3 to play the ps1 and ps2 games? I ebayed a device called the "USB Memory Card Adapter Reader Converter for Sony PS2 to PS3 Playstation 3" and its dirt cheap, has this been tested will this work for both ps1 and ps2 memory cards to play the games on the ps3 without transferring the data somehow to the console?

Im sure the community has come across a lot of newly interested people like you and are sick of re explaining the whole situation but ill do it again:
I have no idea about the "converter" that you speak of but, to my knowledge, playing ps1 games and or backups is currently playable but unless you have an old phat ps3 with "Backwards Compatability", then playing any ps2 titles is not possible on the ps3; i know though, that a limited collection of some ps2 classics, such as "San Andreas" have been have been released on psn as downloadables for purchase, that work on any ps3. and, judging by your tone, since you say you use psn, you have probably updated past system version 3.55, which you still need to be on, at least as a base firmware, before jailbreaking or updating to an updated cfw like 4.21 or 4.30/4.31. but as i said earlier 3.55 is essential so unless you have some sort of flasher, then i dont think you can even jailbreak. Though psn access is(or was) not always guaranteed, currently, for ps3s that are not banned at least (there are unban methods, but they are patched frequently), psn access is enabled, and probably will continue to be because of the recently released lvl0 keys. speaking of bans, unless you know how to conceal homebrew while going online, you run a high risk of being banned while using cfw. For my purposes and opinions though, even though i was recently banned, the pros still heavily outweigh the cons, and besides i have a second ps3 for non-cfw psn access. So the choice lies with you, there are many advantages and reasons to jailbreak, in addition to many other things, you can even bring back linux to ps3s with otheros++. so again, i hope this helped clarify things for you, and its up to you to decide.

The converter your talking about was launched along with the Ps3 in 2006. It works irrespective of your PS3 version i.e. It works on all PS3's. And yes it works for both Ps1 and Ps2 memory cards.
Also, which version Ps3 do you have and which firmware are you on. If your above 3.55 then you need a hardware flasher and also if your Ps3 has Nand instead of Nor flash then you are stuck. The old Phat Ps3's i think till the G models have nand flash and all Ps3' after G including Slim and Superslim have Nor flash.
Though, i read somewhere that the new E3 flasher can can be used to downgrade Nand memory consoles and also you can dual-boot a CFW and OFW
