I have a 2TB Calvary working as my external right now it works like a charm and i use EASEUS Master Professional to partition and format it. I haven't seen any diffrence in the speed when using the usb but i have using my ESATA port.

I used EASEUS Master Professional to format 2TB drive in about a few mins. It should be empty when you buy it anyway that is why it was quick..

I use a Freeagent Desktop 2TB and it works fine. I used FAT32FORMAT.EXE to format it.

Awesome, I didn't know offhand how to format large sizes in fat32.

There is an e-sata port on the PS3?

As for your problem, try running it in windows xp compatibility mode.
