Where Should I Start?

Sorry if this seems repetitive(you guys probably get thousands of these a day) but where should I start with jailbreaking my PS3? I'm slightly confused with all these different methods of doing it and such. Just basically filling me in on what I should use and all that would be fine, I don't need directions on directly how to do it. Do I need to buy one of those dongles? or can I just use my USB drive? My PS3 hasn't been updated for awhile, so I'd imagine at the moment it's not even at 3.50. It actually hasn't even been turned on for over a month or so.

1. Update to 3.55 OFW
2. Download kmeaw 3.55 CFW
3. Install via recovery (kmeaw)
4. Get a backup manager and any homebrew you're looking for from the link in my sig.
5. Profit!

You do not need a dongle. You can install the custom firmware (cfw) by using your usb drive--make sure the drive is formatted to FAT32, or the ps3 won't be able to recognize it. Do know that cfw only goes up to 3.55; there's no cfw for 3.60 at this yet, meaning that when psn is finally back online, you won't be able to access it. This also means that you can't yet play any games that require 3.60, such as Portal 2.

Check out this sticky for basic instructions on installing the cfw. It's pretty quick and easy. There are several cfws to choose from, but kmeaw is the most popular and has the best game compatibility. Kmeaw is the one discussed in the link. Multimanager is the most popular app for running game backups off a hard drive, but there are plenty of other good managers (I use Rogero). Check out the backup manager section of the forum: there are sticky threads for multiman and rogero there.

Where should I get the 3.55 OFW from though? This is my first time messing with something that's not a computer, so I'm trying to make sure I don't break anything. A quick google search only brought me to a 3.60 update.

You can still get some of the firmwares here: Ps3OsRels - EurAsiaWiki or I believe there is a thread in the General Jailbreak or Jailbreak discussion sub-forum. You'll also need to know about the recovery menu (How to access the PlayStation 3... | PlayStation® Community Forums) in order to install CFW's. If you decide to install MultiMan as your backup manager, you'll need bdemu.pkg. The easiest way to find it is to go to the PS3 Game Backup sub-forum, find the MultiMan sticky thread, and click on the paperclip on the far right. Scroll down till you find bdemu.rar. Download that, extract it, put it on your thumbdrive, and install via Install Packages (only need to do this once).

Okay, so I'm updated to 3.55. Now, I can't get into recovery mode. I turned it off, then pressed the button until it turned on and then off again. Then pressed it again until I heard the normal beep, and then another beep. After that it just starts as normal...

Unplug any USB devices you have attached and try to get into recovery again. Also, start the PS3 in a clean mode by unplugging it and plugging it back in or flipping on/off the main power switch (slim/fat) and before turning it on, try the recovery mode procedure.

Thanks, I got it now. I guess it was probably the fact that I had USB's in, and also wasn't holding down the power button long enough. Gah, I'm so stupid sometimes. Thanks for all the help guys :).
