I plan on jailbreaking with my TI-84, what backup loader would be recommended?
As far as I've seen, the most often recommended backup loaders are currently Gaia Manager (now at 1.02) and Open Manager (currently 1.17.2). I personally have both, as well as BM2, installed concurrently, but tend to use Gaia the most.
thanks, hermes is the only backup loader with the ability to load backups without a disc in am i right?
No, the newest PL3 builds can do so as well. I use the new PL3 release from three or four days ago via Rockbox, and it supports it, as did the previous release that DanyL did for Rockbox (I wish it was versioned in some way so I could record exact build number).
The one advantage that Hermes has at the moment is its ability to patch some games to run that don't run on PL3. The new release of PL3 was supposed to fix that, but apparently (given the complaints I've read) it doesn't do so properly.
Hermes is a Payload not a Backup Loader/Manager.
I tend to use Gaia Manager the most right now.

I personally use Gaia and/or Deans multiMan.
Try them all and settle on one which works for you.
Be warned though, some may overwrite each other and if you delete them, can also delete your games.
sorry to sound like a noob but in order to play backups I need a Payload & a Backuploader?
