Basically you use it too check 2 files against each other, a reputable source will post an MD5 hash/checksum for say Kmeaw 3.55 and then if you download Kmeaw 3.55 from somewhere else and its checksum isnt the same it's prolly a fake or some files are missing or corrupt. Basically for a noob its just to check validity. you can use a hash calculator to get it.

An md5 hash is a code that software generates from the data in a file, it is then used by other software to check all the data is the same as the original (no crap added or corruption in download, etc). Google md5 check software and choose from one of the many free md5 check programs they're easy to use, usually just point it at the file you want to check nd give it the code it should be i.e. ca595ad9f3af8f1491d9c9b6921a8c61 and let the software do iit's thing.

Yea what they said^ Also check the MD5s of CFW before you install it so you dont risk bricking it.
Because it could contain something in it. Because if you change even one bit of the file, the md5 changes
