what do I need to KNOW before the hack?

Goodday all.

I have saved enough money finally, to buy a PS3. This may seem like nothing, but I have saved for a long time, I am very poor.


Now, I understand there are many generations of PS3. Is one generation better to hack then another?

What do I need to do to hack my PS3 and play downloaded games?

Also, I heard that downgrading the firmware of a PS3 caused the DVD blue ray player to stop working, these are the issues I DONT want so I am trying to figure out, what I need to know BEFORE the hack.thanks

You need to know that you don't hack your ps3 to play downloaded games, but to play backups of your original copies

Different models have different pros and cons. It'll be far easier to find slims in your local stores like Best Buy and what not, as fats haven't been made in a while.

The wikipedia article on PS3 explains some differences. For starters, older fats could load other operating systems like Linux, they also have a PS2 processor in them that will allow you to play PS2 games (slims cannot play PS2 games). All consoles will allow you to play PS1 games.

You can currently downgrade any model so long as the firmware is <=3.50. You can jailbreak 3.41 (allows homebrew and backup loading).

There are other more nuanced differences between the slims and fats. Fats appear to be losing their Bluray movie playback during downgrades, but slims for the most part do not seem to be losing this. Fats also apparently have the ability (or they did till today anyway when the DNS trick stopped working) of running PSN content on 3.41 (as far as I can tell there's no way to make this work on slims).

Finally, I think some older models of PS3 supported less media formats, but I may be mistaken. Specifically, the older fats I think don't do some of the lossless Bluray audio formats. (Which isn't a huge deal as you can still pass the audio as bitstream and let your receiver decode it).

The TL;DR is if you want to load other operating systems and play PS2 games, you need a fat, but as of now, downgrading one may kill the bluray movie playback capabilities. A fat will also be much harder to track down than a slim. For the most part, it doesn't matter, just get whatever you can find and make sure it's on a FW <=3.50.

I plan on buying a slim as it seems its a better deal. Also, I read the FAQ and saw this

No, it requires specific hardware. There are now several clones available as well as emulation software that can be run from a variety of portable devices to allow you to launch Backup Manager.
