Please excuse me for my ignorance, I have been out of the game for years.
I bought this:
USB DEVELOPMENT BOARD DIYGADGET.COM
It works great for me every time...rips and plays what i have.
I keep hearing about payloads and hermes and other shit.
Will this board work for the long haul? or should i be looking at a replacement?
I have a phat bwc 60 gig ps3 upgraded to 320 gig internal.
Running the very first bm that came out, and I'm lost with these new payloads, etc...is it necessary?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I know I'm a loser...is there a noob forum around here?

You guys really need a noobie forum around here.
With all these jb devices and threads that vanish overnight...how is one possibly to keep up?
Some people work full time all day, every day!
Doesn't mean we don't enjoy the scene and appreciate everything, rather need something solid...like perhaps a ps3 sub-forum for noobs with some tutorials explaining things to guys that can't be here all day...every day.
Just a thought.

OK you will get the large majority of your games (assuming they are not recent) to play with a disc in the drive as you already know. With the latest payloads and managers you can run 3.41+ games (for now) plus quite a few will play without the need for a disc in the drive.
The ultimate question you pose - "is it necessary?" - no I guess it's not but it certainly would be very worthwhile using the latest payload for your board (no I dont know what that would be) in combination with one of the latest managers.
I am in exactly the same boat as you workwise but still make sure I try to spend at least an hour a day on this site to keep abreast of latest developments as it is extremely dynamic at the moment.
