What is the best CFW/otherOS for me?

I know there are hundreds of these im sure, but I have some specific questions. I have a system on 3.55 kmeaw and I would like to back up my games on the system, but my cd drive doesnt work.
Is there a CFW that will allow me to play back ups without the need for a blu ray in the cd drive?
can I replace the disk drive on my ps3?
can I hook one ps3 up to the other and back up that way? my other system is on current firmware (and always will be since its my main one)
also, what is the best otherOS to use?
one last thing... is there an n64 emulator for ps3 yet?

-They all do this, not all games work discless, but a lot do, especially on the latest CFW (Rogero 4.30 v2.0.3

there is just so much information and so many different ways to do this im just kind of overwhelmed...

So what I think I should do is update my 3.55 system to 4.30, because everything for 3.55 seems to be outdated correct?

I just really hate to update it... the system was stuck in an update loop ever since geohot first unlocked the system ages ago and its been installed into my brain to never leave 3.55 lol

DEX firmwares can run games discless 100%.

I thought DEX firmwares are dangerous and shouldnt be attempted by n00bs such as myself? lol i dunno im pretty good at following directions haha does anyone have the relevant links?
