Want To Purchase External Hard Drive
Want To Purchase External Hard Drive –
09-14-2010,07:24 PM
Hi everyone..I want to purchase an external hard drive for my PS3..I was first going to get the Western Digital mypassport portable one but I read the reviews and some were complaining about the USB drive unplugging itself and that it was not reliable..so I was checking out the Seagate FreeAgent 1TB desktop drive which has gotten some great reviews..but my question about the desktop drives(Besides it needing to be plugged in all the time to an outlet) when I turn on the PS3 will it be detected automatically or do I have to press a button in order for it to turn on? I have a western digital desktop hard drive for my computer and I always have to press a button in order for it to power on..should I be looking out for speed as far as externals go or are they all basically the same as far as speed goes

The PS3 won't be detected automatically unless it is already in FAT32 format already, which if it isn't its not that hard to format to FAT32 just make sure you disable your password because it won't show up on the PS3 even if its in the right format(took me around 3 hours to figure that out), My external hard drive is always on I don't have to press a button to turn it on as long as its plugged in the wall and the usb is in the PS3. I would go for a 7200 rpm hard drive.

I ordered the Seagate 1TB freeagent GoFlex desktop hard drive..they told me that I can format it to FAT 32 when I get it using the windows 7 utility..I dont have any password on my PS3 so that wont be an issue..out of the box its NTFS but I will change it to a 1 partitian drive(that is what I was told I needed to do) because with the Seagate drives they come with some software for backing up which I will not be needing

I have owned a Western Digital Passport for almost a year now and it has never disconnected it once. It is a great drive and i wouldnt think about buying any other product if it broke on me.

Or you can get hdxt and get a cheap internal to be used as an internal ps drive. I found that more games work on internal hdd than external. So don't waste time on ext hdd... I got a Seagate Free agent 1TB. 80% of the games don't work (black screen and hang after launch)

My seagate external hard drive just shipped..how come it hangs on every launch..weird since other hard drives work just fine with it..I will have to test it out..I already have a 640 gig internal drive but I was thinking to mix and match, have the games that require the internal on the internal and the games that can be on the external on the external drive

So you own 80% percent of ps3 games? lol
I also bought that 1tb goflex desktop. Haven't gotten my avr yet, but it's great. Besides there's a PSJB compatibility list , so check out what works on External. Unless you want to have 20 games on the hdd. You can always store 1 game on the internal and when you finish or get bored of the game, just dump it on the external as backup and load the new game to the internal , repeat process.

Hey there so since you have the drive I have a question.(I am getting mine delivered tomorrow) it comes formatted to NTFS..I know for the PS3 it requires FAT 32, what did you use to format it to FAT 32 because when I called Best Buy yesterday they said I could use the software built into windows but I think the only option will be exfat which I am not sure is the same as FAT 32

I didn't mean password on the PS3 I meant on the external hard drive when you get it(I had to put a password on mine when I first got it). And you can use SwissKnife to format it to FAT32 I think its free.
