VERY Good HDD question I hope to have answered by the pros –
I'm not a noob, but I'm not an expert when it comest to PS3 Hardware. That being said, I know it's not possible to swap out a PS3 hdd with a lower firmware and use that in order to keep 3.41 but update your system to 3.50. However, today I was trying to think of a way to get some DLC and transfer it to my console, which for now I know isn't possible, but i Had a question. What if, I logged into my account on a PS3 running 3.50, downloaded some content, and then swapped the drive INTO a PS3 running 3.41 in order to dump some of the content with the filemanager. Are the individual PS3 drives locked to prevent access to that? Can they possibly be imaged and accessed? I know the firmware is written in the NAND, but since I'm not trying to change that I was wondering if that would work.
I am not 100% sure on this but my impression is that you would need to format the HD from the 3.50 firmwared PS3 when you put it into the 3.41 firmwared PS3. On top of the some (not sure what all has it) DLC has to be activated on PSN so even if you did get it on the 3.41 PS3 you might be stuck with it doing nothing.
I know some people were running into trouble when they changed to a bigger HD and used the backup tool. They were able to get the PSN games they had bought on the new HD but they couldnt activate them.
You can't access a HDD from one PS3 in another, it's signed to the machine.
