A)Download 3.55 Official firmware to your PC.
B)Download Rebug 3.55.2 firmware to your PC
C)Download the latest version of multiman to your PC
    D)Download bdemu2 to your PC

Grab a usb stick and create a folder called "PS3", no quotes.
Open that folder and create another folder called "UPDATE", no quotes(must have caps!).

Grab A) and put that in the "UPDATE" folder
With ya usb plugged into your PS3 scroll the main XMB to the system update option and select via storage media

Follow the instructions and you will be on 3.55 OFW

Return the USB stick to the PC and remove A) from the UPDATE folder.
Place B) into the UPDATE folder and be sure to rename this file: "PS3UPDAT.PUP" (note the lack of an "E" for this pup file is not a typo!)
While the USB is in the PC, grab C) and D) and place them in the root of the usb.

Return the USB to the PS3 and install your Rebug Firmware via storage media again.
Follow the same instructions as earlier and you will now be on Rebug Firmware.

Go to package manager icon in the game column of XMB and open it. Choose the install packages option and choose the standard location option. Install each package 1 by 1, or click triangle to get the install all packages prompt.

    Links here.
Check here for the rebug firmware. You want 3.55.2 links rar on the right hand side of the screen under downloads. Open the rar and it will give you the link to their firmware.
    Codename: REBUG

Here is the link to BDEMU2 You will need this for Multiman to be able to load your game backups
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

You will need to find 3.55 Official firmware via google, and Multiman package is on this site so wont be hard for you to find that.
    Good luck

Okay, first download 3.55 and install that on your PS3.
Then, download Kmeaw 3.55. You are now on Custom Firmware. If you want homebrew applications, I suggest you look in the emulator forum, or if you want to run backups I suggest you use Multiman (multiMAN - multifunctional tool for your PS3 (Game manager/File manager/FTP/AVCHD/BDMV)). Good luck, and next time read the stickies for tutorials :/

Since you're new, I'll just pipe in and add that the two previous are correct. AFAIK, there are no custom firmwares for 3.50; it sorta got passed by in that regard. There are a few different firmwares available. Kmeaw (one of) the most popular. Also, pretty good for noobs. Rebug alot of special options but maybe a little daunting for noobs, and maybe alot of features you might not need(though it's still super cool). Another option of course is to jailbreak and downgrade to 3.41 and keep jailbreaking or use Hermes custom 3.41. For that you need jailbreak device like e3card reader or ti84 calculator you reprogram. The easiest is just to go to 3.55. (One other method described here: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/qa-...Bnew%5D-89286/, he says it's simple but looks complicated to me). There is also a tool for making your own custom firmware. The link to it(and a bunch of other useful stuff) is here: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/new...lection-83805/ (New Homebrew - PS3/PC Collection) .Just make sure you read the directions carefully before you do anything. It is straightforward but you can mess up if you do it wrong. Also, if you download any large firmware files it's a good idea check their integrity with a checksum program(especially depending on where you get them ).

I think the easiest is just to upgrade to Kmeaw (assuming it has the feature you want). As you get familiar with custom stuff and homebrew, you can always downgrade or install a different firmware; you would not be locked into Kmeaw. Please, have a look around these forums and you will find topics on all this stuff.

CFW is the way to go. Lots of aps being developed for 3.55 as compared to 3.41, also less head aches when playing games no eboot modifications are needed. You can also have OTHEROS support with 3.55 CFW

    1. What do I need to jb my console?
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/cfw...ll-pack-77294/ (CFW kmeaw + OFW 3.55 + GAIA 2.05 ready to install pack)

    2. Dongle or cfw? Which one is better to play latest games and dont hv to update to 3.5x-3.6x etc.
CFW because it's free. generally you can't play new games that require 3.56+ but there are a few exceptions.

    3. What pkg do I need?
