i want to upgrade my hdd but i cant use the backup utility to make an img of my hdd at its current state because i am on 3.41 and you need 3.42 for it to work. my question is how would i be able to copy everything on my current hdd and swap it to my new one?

I just did this on a friends console on 3.41. System Menu -> Backup. Had to have a fat32 device connected to a USB port, but it backed up all his content (save games, downloaded PSN stuff, etc) and we restored it on a different PS3.

When you say you need 3.42 for it to work, do you mean the Jailbreak exploit/dongle. Because you're in for a surprise if you update as the exploit has been patched in 3.42 and will not work...

Nope, just official ones from PSN. He swapped PS3's cause the one he had was on 3.41, but the blu-ray drive died. So, he got a new one (came with 3.15), upgraded to 3.41, and copied back over the backed up content. Then we JB'd it
