What have you gotten to work? What do you desperately want to get working but can't just yet?

Where did you get that information from? Of course, PS3 can boot without a blu-ray drive...

Unless you meant by your blu-ray laser, then yes, that's correct. You will need to replace your laser with a working one.

replacing the lens wont fix anything where do u got that information?...lol

if u have no board u cant do shit, if the board is ****ed u cant do shit, if u have a diferent board u cant do shit, end of story.

    i tested this myself.

lets pray for a workaround cuz its driving me crazy.

I'm actually gonna start playing around with this myself. Currently I have a ps3 that does not even have a laser in it. It still has the logic board for the optical drive, but no laser assembly. This PS3 does boot without a problem and can even be updated without hitting reboot loops. I just upgraded it from 3.21 to 3.41 without a hitch.

I'm going to start playing around with removing the drive altogether and see what happens. I will also try the backup manager that has no disc support and see what happens with that.

I have one without the logic board. I was able to put a working drive in it and get the update to install and the ps3key starts no problem but it won't launch backup manager or anything. I have a couple logic boards that could be the board for that ps3, but the clips are all mangled so its going to be fun trying to get one going only to find out its the wrong board. lol.

I'm not talking about the board... I'm talking about the laser. If your board is working, but the laser is dead, apps won't be run. Most of PS3 blu-ray drives issues that users have are usually dead lasers.

Is there any way of telling if it is the laser or a bigger problem? I'm thinking of getting a lens with deck (ie incl. motor etc) .. and want to know first if there's a way of telling if the rest of the drive unit is ok.
