    Hey guys,

I don't know if this is widely known already, but I recently bought a vertical stand for my ps3 slim including a 4-port usb hub from saitek. I forgot (as so often) to unplug the other usb port (where i ususally kept my external drive) before switching the ps3 on. Usually it would give me the unknown usb device error, but now that i had the hub connected and the usb hdd connected to the hub, instead of the ps3 itself - it worked!

So if you are annoyed by replugging your usb stuff, get one of those stands (in europe its labeled saitek at amazon but actually it was madcatz, dunno if its the same firm nowadays lol)

    Cheers,

    W.

Good to know. I don't have a hub but I've noticed that having my USB Hard Drive in the first slot and my explot board in the second ensures it works nicely. However using my USB dongle will bring the error either way.

    Thanks for sharing
but i still don't fully understand what your procedure was? or is it just me lool..
Ok so you have a usb hub.. so do i my question is how does this work even after switching on/off? and was it because you mistakenly left something in your other usb port while the hub was connected? slightly interested in how this would work

This is something I discovered as well which has made my life much easier. I'll to try explain in better detail for anyone that doesn't get it:

In some cases, if you have an external drive plugged into your PS3 while attempting to boot into JB mode, the PS3 will fail to enter JB mode.

The only way to start up in JB mode would be to unplug the external drive, boot up the PS3 using the power-reset combination, wait for the PS3 to sucessfully boot into JB mode, then plug the external drive back in.

If you have this problem, you can try plugging the external drive into a USB hub, then plug the USB hub into the PS3.

Now when you attempt to boot into JB mode, the external will not cause it to fail.

The only problem I've found is that this causes the Genesis and PSX emulator to fail, since the external drive will no longer be plugged into DEV_USB00 or whatever its supposed to be...

I leave my 1TB ext HDD plugged in far right USB during JB procedure since day one with no problem, I've had my dongle plugged into a USB hub quite a few times with still no problems

I think it just depends on the way the device identifies itself on the bus. I have a super-cheap $5 4-port hub that won't allow the jailbreak to work if it's plugged in at startup. And I have a numeric keypad for a laptop that has 2 USB ports on it which allows the jailreak to work either plugged into it or the second USB port.

Same thing with external drives. My flash stick works fine being plugged it at boot, but not my external HDD.
