    Hi,

I plan to buy a 500GB Internal HDD for my PS3, which brand should I get between Hitachi($75), WD($75) and Samsung($71)?

I also want a 2TB External HDD, would it be better to buy 3.5" HDD with Power Adapter than a 2.5" without? Since 1 USB port being use by PSJB, the second usb port might not be enough power for 2.5" HDD?

    any advice?

    Thanks.

With PSGroove you can uplug the board once into dev mode (or whatever it's called) so you still have two usb slots.

Just get the Samsung since it's the cheapest.

I personally have a portable 500gb 2.5 external which I got for use with my Wii back in January. I could've got a 1TB 3.5" for the same price, but I went for smaller physical size as it would be more convenient. It works fine with my Wii so I wouldn't think it would run any slower on the PS3 (Although I will prefer to play games from the internal anyway, once I can use the hack).

I'm not sure if you what you say about USB power is true, but if it is then there is no issue with PSGroove and it's derivatives, since you can take out the USB device after the hack has been initiated. But if you're talking about the first USB stick, the overpriced PSJB, then you have to keep it in. But as I said I doubt it would affect the power.

One thing to look out for with externals is whether or not they power down to a lower mode when left idle. Some games will not stream any new data for like a minute, so people have had issues with their drives slowing down to save power. I don't think mine has this issue.

The drives that slow down every few minutes always have tools on the manufacturers' website to disable it. I have a 2TB 3.5" drive on the way. I was going to purchase an enclosure for it and use that for the PS3..I'm fairly sure the enclosure only has USB power. Is it supposed to be powered by AC? The PS3 can handle a 3.5" 2tb external via usb right?

Yes but don't 3.5" drives require external power? I've always thought it was like that. 2.5s only need a USB connection and 3.5s require extra power via a plug.

How about the Seagate Momentus XT, a hybrid 7200 rpm notebook drive with 4GB of SLC NAND on board

Sounds great. ANY 2.5" drive will work for internals (with a filesize limit of 750GB I think ) and any external drive should work.

Well the enclosure I bought online is designed for 3.5" drives..I just didn't see anything mentioned about external power. I'll see when it gets here. Thanks for the info

Thanks for the advice guys, I generally perfer the 2.5" which is portable and easy to carry around, plug and play. I used a 40GB HDD from one of my PS3 + an enclosure and use it for my wii no problem even without the need of the second power usb cable pluging in.
I read around and heard some say 2.5" external might put some stress on the ps3 coz of the extra power it drain from the ps3, but i dont know how true it is.
I ordered the Teensy 2.0, I know I won't need PsGroove pluging in once the ps3 boot in debug mode.
I guess it all come down to Price, $60 difference between 2.5" and 3.5"

    Decision, Decision, Decision...

Im pretty sure all 3.5" HDD require power adapter to power the HDD, only 2.5" HDD doesn't. It doesn't mention about the external power adapter, might be because it doesn't come with one and you need to purchase a separate one, but very unlikely, they might includ it but just dont mention it.
