Updating codecs without actually updating?

This is probably a shot in the dark as I doubt any work has been done on this, but is it possible to update the PS3's video codecs without actually updating the PS3? I know Sony release updates for DIVX playback in firmware revisions but obviously with running CFW you can't get access to those updates.
