update play tv but not firmware?

Can I update my play tv software without effecting my firmware? I connected my ps3 to my LAN today which obviously gave some internet as play tv is offering an update and I want to stay at 3.55fw clearly.

No, don't update it. The latest version of PlayTV update (2.03) requires 3.56. You can update your PlayTV without updating your firmware, but you won't be able to use it without updating to 3.56+.

Actually, if I were to run a spoofed cfw like ultimate at 3.7 would that work to allow a play tv update? What's in the update to play tv anyway? Anything I'd want? Cheers.

Unfortunately not, spoofing your firmware to the latest only prevents you from accidentally updating, nothing else.
