Can I just run the 3.55 OFW pup and be good to go?

Maybe delete some homebrew just to be safe, if I end up going online?

Long Story Short: Only completely safe way to do this is use a 2nd ps3 for OFW/Online play.

    Short Story Long:

From what I've seen, nobody really knows the true answer to this question except SONY. However, given their current security measures, the general concensus is that if you are online, SONY assumes you are on OFW and hence you are no threat to them. If a new hack is released which allows us all back online again, there is a good chance they can still flag/ban you.

Personally, I updated one of my PS3s about a month ago to OFW. I started by deleting all unsigned homebrew except Multiman. Then I FTPed and deleted any custom folders I created in the file structure. Then I deleted Multiman and upgraded to OFW. I have since done a full backup and restored onto an upgraded hard drive. I did not do an intentional reformat on my data. All my saves are intact, and my PSN Access is working flawlessly.

For data completion's sake, I am not one of the users who received an email from SONY warning of a ban.

EDIT: It may also be worth noting that I used the certificate hack to get online with CFW for the 2-3 weeks it was working. I did not remember to replace this certificate with the original before upgrading. Still no ban. /EDIT

I like to assume I'm safe from ban, but honestly have no idea. Remember that the firmware doesn't reside on the harddrive, so even a full HDD format won't completely protect you from any checks SONY may have built into their newer firmwares. Since SONY was very publicly upset about their 3.55 OFW being hacked, it is not unreasonable to assume their newer firmware checks to see if you have OFW or CFW and sets a flag, which SONY could use at any point in the future to ban you. If you want to be completely paranoid: move to 3.55 OFW (which can't have these checks since it was released before 3.55 CFW), and then move to latest OFW. Of course, if you started by hacking 3.41 or earlier.... well, hopefully you get the picture.

Thanks man, that was a pretty good explanation.

Yeah, I was planning on going CFW -> 3.55 OFW -> 4.0 OFW or w/e
