Hmm, I normally find that if it gets to 30% or higher it's a loose connection somewhere. If the clip is broken on the logic board or mobo (where the ribbon cable attaches) then you need to cut some plastic to make a shim (I use a plastic milk bottle, works perfect once it's a tight fit). I've gotten plenty stopping around 40% when all that was wrong was a dodgey BR connection, even though most people say it's around 60% for the BR drive to be at fault. Even if the clip is fine, make sure it's in as far as it'll go and the pressure's good.
Make sure everything it properly attached, like the wifi / bluetooth / cardreader etc. Since you got it without a BR drive, the bloke who owned it before you must have been tinkering under the hood and might have knocked something loose or didn't connect a cable fully.
I did a quick search for your error code, but no relative replies (that provide any useful info). That code should be a good start at finding out what's wrong, but your first code seems more popular (40% being your best bet to search for). Unplug any connections and re-insert them carefully, that is normally the fix for update loops I find.
