I will prob get flamed for asking dumb questions but hell here goes.

I am big one modding xboxes and recently swapped one for a couple of ps3s with drive issues which are now up and running.
the 60gb is on firmware 3.41
and the slim 160gb is on 3.56

from what I have read this are both exploitable for jailbreaking.
do I need one of these magic usb stick keys to do this still? or will a ordinary usb stick work now?

Will I being able to play ps1 and ps2 backups on my 60gb? thats the main reason I want to do this.
what else can I do with a jailbroken ps3?

    thanks

First off, no one is going to flame you here. We are against bashing people looking for help.

Now, your 3.41 can be modded rather easily. Simply download OFW 3.55, and install it. Then, download and install 3.55 Kmeaw. Use this tool to make sure the files are correct before installing them ... http://psx-scene.com/forums/content/...-updated-2030/

If your machine is a BC model, then you can purchase a Cobra USB to help support PS2 and PS1 backups. You can also download ONE, which enables PS1 backups. multiMAN should also be able to play PS1 backups, but I have never used that method, only ONE. You can find the latest multiMAN to install at the Cobra USB website.

What else can you do? Well, you can always try your hand at developing. Or if that is not your speed, you can always mod your games. Other stuff includes homebrews, running PSN backups, Showtime (which is a very nice mediacenter), PSP backups, etc, etc...

You can also purchase a True Blue dongle to play the latest backups. There are clones, but due to True Blue security measures, those are not recommended.

If you have any more questions, do not be afraid to ask

good info above. about your slim on 3.56 - you'll need to google your model number + base firmware. If it's 3.55 or below then you need progskeet or the e3 flasher to downgrade it so you can use custom firmware. If it says the base is 3.56 check into demonhades.org JFW. I've never used it so I can't recommend it in any way. I know it has limits but it might be better than nothing. That is installed the same way as KMEAW above

If I were you I would put custom firmware(Kmeaw or Rebug) on your 3.41 unit and update the other to the latest official firmware. Then you can get the benefit of a jail broken PS3 and go online and play all the latest games on your other one.

Very good advice - perfect for online multiplayer and that must have DLC content. LAN play using xLink Kai is very limited on CFW and DLC we have to hope that somebody patches them

Cool thanks for the super quick reply.
Gonna do the 60gb one shortly.
can I get away without a dongle completely? I'm not interested in the new games or true blue, just running old ps1 and ps2 backups from discs.
    its a orginal BC model.

From what I read about one and multiman- One does not require a dongle to play backups and does not support PS2. Multiman does need a dongle? and does support PS2?

I am selling the slim to buy some more slim xboxes to RGH and carry on the hustle.

I already have a 40gb up to date which I rarely play on as the only game I have is twisted metal, everything else I own on the xbox

You an get away with PS1 and PSP backups without a dongle. You will need a dongle for PS2 support (Cobra USB).

As for multiMAN; currenlty it is being developed as mmCM aka multiMAN Cobra Manager. This mean that it can be used with, and without the dongle. Although to take advantage of PS2 support, and other features, a Cobra USB is required (for now, at least)

Since tthousand and bahumatlord gave you advice let me give you mines.

A cobra will cost you about 50 bucks so it will be a 50bucks well spent since you have a BC PS3 hell if I had a BC ps3 I would retire my Soft modded PS2 just to have the "all in one feature" but buy a cobra. Just like tthousand said take advantage of the PS2 emulation I still play my softmodded ps2 "great games" also the ps1 support isnt that bad neither also psp support. I would buy one myself but I dont need it but you will.

    It's worth the money bro
