No, it won't be possible until the firmware is fully decrypted and we're able to call on new libraries that will allow for the use of NTFS. That won't change any way else and NTFS was never programmed into the core OS of the PS3.
well the ps3 understands exFat so maybe it could be possible to trick the ps3, that externtal drives will be recognised as internal drive and so we could use exFat...
There was a thread a couple of months back from someone that said they were able to take their internal drive out and put it into a external case (without formatting) and the PS3 recognized it. I didn't follow up any to see if it was fake or not, but I'm guessing it was if it's not a more publicised solution to getting over the 4GB barrier on external drives.
Well, then duh, that'd work. It's technically not an external drive, as it's getting the info to the PS3 from the internal connection. I thought they actually took the drive out and put it in a USB external enclosure and plugged it into a USB port. Anyway, that makes more sense.
I remember that thread too, but if I remember correct what they did was run the internal sata connection to an external drive that was still in its enclosure, then format it and disconnect the sata cable, reconnect it via usb and the ps3 recognised it as well as it's internal drive, both with no file size limitations. There were other points they said were important like it had to be mounted with mount point manager or something.
But like you say, it might well have been fake.
Edit: Found the thread here. ([GUIDE] Play 4GB+ games on an external (plug internal drive into external enclosure))
Is the OS doesn't recognize NTFS, then I don't see why it would suddenly work for internal drives.
Now it is possible the internal drives actually use a completely different file system altogether that doesn't have a 4GB limit.
Given the benchmarks on backing up to an external drive versus the internal drive, that may be the case. FAT32 is a very slow file system.
It would make a lot more sense to me to replace your internal HDD with a larger drive. You can do this without voiding your warranty. If you're worried that Sony will detect files on the HDD, you have to install the Backup Manager on your HDD so you're already taking that risk. And the worst Sony can do is block PSN, which they're already doing.
I have an old hacked XBox I put emulators on, and I loved being able to play emulators with a controller on my TV as opposed to my PC. But the processor was a bit slow for some of the emulators.
I've been waiting for years for someone to come up with a PS3 "jailbreak" so I could put emulators/homebrew on my PS3.
