Sorry if ive posted this in the wrong place, bit of a noob here. I repair playstations (blu ray issues, YLOD, general parts replacement etc) but I have not got a clue about jailbreaking/hacking etc.

Ive got a PS3 here with a totally screwed motherboard. I found the re-marrying logic board to MB thread and thought "yeh great problem solved!". So, I put a different motherboard in my PS3 (80GB fat CECHL03) to prepare for the remarrying of a logic board to it. I switched it on to make sure it works and that firmware 3.55 of lower was running, and got this message:

"The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system.

If the system cannot be restarted, the system partition of the hard disk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software.
Insert storage media that contains update data of version 2.70 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time.
For information on how to obtain update data, refer to the SCE Web site for your region."

I tried abother MB and got the same message.

Now im sure this probably makes sense to everyone here, but for me it just doesnt! Do I put the HDD in a different console to format it? And I found a 2.70pup on ps3 Wiki, but there is a CEX and DEX version, and although Ive searched, I cant find out what is the difference or which one I need. I presume when I do know which one I need I just pop it on a blank USB and put it in the far right USB port and then do start and select, going off that message above?

If anyone could point me in the right direction here, it would help me so much as I have several PS3's that I couldnt previously repair that I can now (if I can learn some shit here).

    Tools I have:

P3FREE dongle (borrowed from someone last night, no idea how it works)
PSP (jig installed, borrowed again last night, and no idea how it works lol)
    Blank USB drive

any help would be appreciated so much. Im a fast learner so If someone can even point me in the right direction that would be great! Cheers

From the sounds of it you have gotten the error message because of the new motherboards these won't go away until you place the "2.70 PUP" on to a USB drive/dongle and then restore the firmware.

The difference between CEX and DEX is not a lot the main difference is the CEX is for "Test units" and the DEX is for "Retail Units"

There is a quick way to find out about that and that with the serial at the back (CECHL03)

From this i can tell you that it is the retail and you need the DEX PUP file and you will be good to go.

Just drop that PUP on a USB drive and you will be up and running in no time then you can put a 3.55 Firmware on and play with your backups and what not.

Hope this will help you out.

If anyone would like to add more or if i have missed something then please do.

If it's a retail console then use the CEX .PUP file(the DEX version is for debug units)

    PS3 SuperSlim 120gb Firmware: 4.31 OFW / PS3 Slim 1Tb Firmware: Rebug 4.30.2

How long does it normally take to update? Ive put the CEX PUP file on a flash drive and placed it in the second USB port with my control pad in the first one. Pressed start and select and its been giving me a "Checking.... Please wait." screen for about 10mins now

    Ok, so now im getting:

No applicable update data was found.
Insert storage media that contains update data of version 2.70 or later, and then press the START and SELECT buttons at the same time.

Ive tried doing this with a 3.00 CEX PUP file and same result. Does the name of the file matter? Could it be my flash drive? Also, because I am doing this so I can remarry a logic board to this motherboard, the two obviously arent matching up atm. Could that affect anything? Cheers to anyone who can help me out here

is your usb formatted fat 32? also the ps3updat.pup needs to be in folders PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

you need the special 3.55 no bluray check pup and use that first. then remarry and install your cfw of choice i recommend kmeaw.

also you want cex not dex, just to confirm as the first guy to reply is wrong

You, are my saviour. Put the files into folders on the flash and worked no prob. Btw, it doesnt matter which file you use depending on whether your PS is PAL or NTSC does it? Only on start up this PS3 put my standard time zone as the USA which is worrying me slightly lol...

I didnt use the no bluray check pup, I used the 3.00 one but it worked fine.

Again, probably the wrong place to be ask but I dont want to be spamming other places with nooby questions when I already have a nooby thread open here. Do you know how I can get into FSM using the P3FREE dongle? Cheers

.Im suprised the pup installed fully, make sure you remarry before upgrading. All ps3 firmwares are the same region wise as long as they are retail and the same version. there are a few firmwares where there are more than 1 official version but they were buggy for all regions (3.41, 3.56)

there is a homebrew app to put you into service mode without a dongle if you are having a hard time with the psp jig app or can't flash psgrade for whatever reason to your dongle. do you have the psgrade hex for your dongle?

Ok, so I cant get into FSM using the psp Ive got, as its FW 6. 20 (ive read the jig only works with FW 5. xx). I cant downgrade it either, as it is not my PSP. The app that you mention - ive looked at it and ive really no idea how to use it. Says I need to launch the app, and Ive no idea how to do that... cant find anything to launch on my ps3 when I have the USB plugged in. It says it only works for jailbroken PS3's as well. Ive been trying to get into FSM using the p3free dongle but again ive not a clue how to do it. Ive searched all over google and cant find the answer. Ive posted as well on the p3free section on this forum but had no reply. Any ideas?
