Yeah it's a system update pup, and there is a small chance of updating with it if you're not careful. You may as well delete them from all your game. to save space since 4 update PUP's from game backups equals about 1gb

    PS3 SuperSlim 120gb Firmware: 4.31 OFW / PS3 Slim 1Tb Firmware: Rebug 4.30.2

If you forget to spoof your cfw and try the play a game 3.5++ then click "ok" it will definetely update your system.
I'm deleting all of them cause I need more space (I have about 300 game) and preventing to update.

What I did was search my game collection for ps3updat.pup and deleted all results, that was on windows with external full of games. Im not 100% sure if the UPDATE folder is required, I seriously doubt it on Custom Firmware.

Nope, "UPDATE" folder doesn't needed at all...
If you wanna update via disc (or faked with multiman) you gonna need that
I have deleted all of them since the Day1 (I mean 3.41JB times) and it wont caused any problem.
Also you can rip off contents (like AC1.pkg on AC:Revelations), languages (default or any other than you use) or videos (3D/2D) you don't wanna use...
