So let me get this straight: some games past 3.55 work?

I remember portal 2 and catheriene working or something? so what games past 3.55 work? (like the highest firmware we can play games...I really hope someone understands what I am talking about.)

Portal 2 is definately not working on current CFW, as far as I know only about 30% of 3.56+ games have a fix and it's doubtful any more game specific fix's will come out before the next major CFW because they've realized not to sign updates for 3.55. PS3 JB2 should be coming out very soon though and boasts playing newer games from a backup bluray copy(3.56+ games wont be able to backup to hdd though) and theres also JFW DH that shouldn't be to far off and MIGHT load newer backups from hdd.

Only certain titles that were patched with 3.55 by Sony. Other than that, nothing above 3.55 works.
Catherine works because the japanese version was released on 3.55. American version was above 3.55, I hear if you switch Eboots, the american version works, but everything is in japanese. I think someone made an english fix for it, though.
As for Portal 2, there's a fix for it going around, but everyone says it's fake, so I wouldn't touch it.

but what's the point of a new dongle if 3.74+ games just block it...

The newest dongle, JB2 claims to be able to play games all the way up to 3.7x, but they use some sort of Eboot mod, from what I understand. The dongle's features will hopefully be implemented to MultiMan, or something sometime soon.

The JB2 thing turned out to be using debug eboots attained from dev consoles. Its not likely to allow future 3.55+ games.
