SATA to USB drive not accepted in BM
SATA to USB drive not accepted in BM –

I had a spare 500GB SATA HDD so I thought I'd get an external case for it and back up my games to it. It connects fine to a PC and I was able to format it to FAT32. It shows up as a SATA-USB bridge.
When I connect it to the PS3, it shows as a 'USB Device'. I can hit triangle and browse the drive and access files if I put them on there but BM doesn't pick it up as an external drive.
I ended up getting BM to work with another external drive that was essentially exactly the same setup but from a 2.5 inch drive (my 60gb from my PS3 that I replaced with a 500gb).
Any ideas why it won't let me backup to that drive?

Is it a green/eco drive? Perhaps this could be an issue (ie. Such drives have a controller on board which controls sleep/spin down mode on the drive)
Could be worth looking at flashing the controller of the drive if there's any firmwares available for it (Check the drive manufacturer site to see if there's anything available)
Beware though, flashing hard drive firmware can be shady.

I don't believe that it is an eco drive but to be sure I'll double check when I get home.
I think the problem may be with the way the PS3 sees it. It doesn't so much see the drive (althgough it does enough to browse it) it seems to see the adaptor as the device connected.
I was thinking that maybe the BM specifically looks for an external drive connected rather than other devices that serve the same function.

People have been backing up to thumb drives though (I know I saw someone using a kingston 16GB)
Perhaps try another external enclosure? Do you have any mates with one you can test on?

I have another couple of enclosures I can test it with. I will see if I can back up to the dirves already in them first.

Good luck, let us know how you go.
