I guess that's the main thing. Couldn't care less about PSN personally, but presumably it won't take long until the new games will require 3.56 by default, it didn't seem to take too long when they went to 3.50.... I guess we'll be able to patch the EBOOT.bin's again as we'll be able to decrypt them...?

What have I lost? PSN. Well sod you sony, im happy to keep my CFW 3.55, have all my game back ups and never have to worry about scratched discs again. Ill also get to enjoy some fantastic homebrew.

And for the games i want to play online? Guess its time to join X Box live!

Thanks to those who gave us homebrew and CFW 3.55.
100% with you on that one. Both my son and daughter have a 40Gb PS3 in their rooms and play online all the time. Both upgraded to 3.56 as well as the 60Gb in the living room. The one in my office is running CFW 3.55 and MultiMan with a portable HDD packed with everything we own, mainly because it takes forever to find who's got the disc I want in this house and it's gonna be great to take on holiday with us. PSN access? Not bothered with it personally.

The only people who will bitch and whine about the current situation are those who want the entire PS3 back library with access to PSN on the basis that they bought a console and somehow they're owed it for free.

Want to play pirated games online in the future? Boo-hoo... you can't!
Get over it and buy an Ecchh-Box you ****ing leeches!

My only concern over the recent firmware update is if Fony have indeed installed a silent backdoor root kit with 3.56 which I'm pretty sure is illegal under EU Law.

    Will wait and see.

To all you homebrew devs... TOP WORK! KEEP IT UP!!!

If the NPDRM keys that Geohot claim to have ever get leaked there will be no need for CFW 3.56+, as homebrew will be signed to look like a game and then installed probably through the Proxy Tool.

So am I right in thinking that whatever geohot and/or fail0verfow possess in terms of keys would mean that none of this is of any real significance anyway (if those keys ever made it out into the open), obviously the PSN part is, but in terms of being able to decrypt/sign stuff etc....?

I do apologize for only looking at a portion of your post, but this is the only thing I disagree with. Unlike the OtherOS situation, Sony didn't take anything away from anyone and updating is again optional. I don't think it's illegal as long the information isn't misused (which we know it always is, but finding true evidence is nearly impossible) and that Sony doesn't publically do that. Also, I think the root-kit is only for use with CFW trying to access online (which is what Sony is essentially trying to stop now).

Edit: Forgot to include that Sony made that pretty clear in the EULA of their intentions, so I guess they do got their asses covered on this one, for now...

3.55 can decrypt read and install 3.56, and we have all the keys for everything 3.55 can do.

I mean logically, 3.55 can make sense of all the files contained in the 3.56 PUP, so all the things needed to make sense of the 3.56 PUP are either already contained in 3.55 or are at least readable in the 3.56 PUP.

That said, there really doesn't seem to any point in 3.56 CFW. With the remote code execution, there's really no way to beat that, and the only advantage 3.56 has over 3.55 is PSN access. Since there's no good way to beat that, there's no real good reason to bother making a 3.56 CFW since even if you did you still wouldn't get PSN access. Aside from PSN, 3.55 can do everything 3.56 can, so why bother?

edit: Oh, I'm stupid and forgot how encryption works for a second. Of course we can decrypt everything in the PUP, but we won't be able to reencrypt because we'll never get the private keys.
No, you can't re-encrypt them using 3.56, but nothing is stopping us from patching the loaders that do those checks.

We need lv0 and possibly the hv private keys, though.

At that point, we need to patch the appropriate checks and rebuild from the ground up. Lots of work, and beyond me, but there is no reason why it can't be done.

Personally, I think Team fail0verflow should lead the effort, since they taunted Sony with the whole "Epic Fail" and "we pwn you" garbage at the CCC Conference. They should back up their words with action.

Graf_chokolo and a hacker who must not be named would probably need to be involved, as well, as they may possess the keys needed.

In short, fail0verflow was right in some ways - Sony can't change the lowest level keys, but then failed to deliver those lowest level keys that we need. If we get those, it truly is game over for Sony... all they can do is make busy work for hackers to analyze and patch subsequent FW releases.

At this point, though, you undoubtedly are correct about the fact that people will not be able to update from OFW 3.56. People should avoid anything "fresh" from Sony from here on out.
Working hard on UberCFW, incorporating NTFS, sub-free NetFlix and Blockbuster, PSN cheat system with built-in swearbot and MAC-spoofing, Adding MKV, RAM and BIK movie support, and Xbox360 emu*.

*not really. Get a life, newbs...

So late in the PS3s life cycle I don't mind if 3.56 never gets a CFW as I can just buy a 2nd PS3 if I want to play online.
PS3s are relatively cheap now compared to when they came out. I think a new PS3 can be had for anywhere from 200-250, so that's not too shabby.

I'm going to bet that newer games, such as the ones you listed, will have some heavy protection, and may very well be off-limits to us unless we go to whatever FW those games require (might be 3.60 by then).
