Replacing Internal HDD - Full Backup?
Replacing Internal HDD - Full Backup? –
12-15-2010,02:20 PM
I understand I can use the supplied backup procedure in the PS3 system itself to replace my internall HDD in my system - However I am wondering will I have to relaod all of my PSN content?
Redownloading would take a very long time... So woudl this procedure backit all up... or since I can FTP to the PS3... can I backup the hdd00 via FTP... install the new drive and use the 3.41 firmware and then reupload all of the content overwriting everything via FTP...
Which is the best way so I have a 1 to 1 copy of my drive?
Thanks

If by "reload" you mean "download" - then no, you won't have to download them all again. The backup utility WILL backup all your existing HDD content (I guarantee it) -- What I can't guarantee is whether or not they'll still be playable. It depends on what PS3 you have;
CECHA-x
CECHB-x
CECHC-x
CECHE-x
Those are fine. Anything above that and you'll undoubtedly lose your license files during the restory process. Basically; if the PS3 asks you to put the update.pup file onto a USB stick during restore, then you're screwed and will most likely have to reconnect to PSN in order to activate the PSN games again.

Hmmmm... I have a CECHL01 - Doesn't fall in line with your suggestions. Might just have to experiment. If I have to reload them by hand I will, was just trying to save time.
I did a restore once before and don't remember it asking for the update.pup file, but I could just be absent minded at this point.
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

If you have a slim(or at least all the slim models I've heard) and attempt to backup your PSN content and then reload it, it will load, but the content will be unplayable and will tell you it needs to be activated.
The only things that will work if you back them up on said models are games where you snagged a demo, and then bought the full unlock, so Marvel vs Capcom 2 for example.

So I have a Slim which I am about to swap the HD for a 750gb, and I don't care about losing my psn content EXCEPT for Marvel vs Capcom 2, Super Street Fighter II HD, and Gunstar Heroes. So am I shitouttaluck on those games on or what?

MvC2 *should* be ok (please don't quote me on that...) as, like Wutangrza said, to activate that you downloaded a specific file that unlocks the demo into a full -- that file *should* get backed up as well. SSF2THD and GH, on the other hand, will be in demo mode only. I feel no shame for telling you this since Sony are the ones that are hurting their LEGITIMATE customers here, but you can "acquire" SSF2THD and Gunstar from shady online sources. If MvC2 doesn't work after your HDD transplant then, sadly, there's nothing you can do for now.
What I can't/won't do however; is tell you WHERE to get the games :P A bit of Googling should help you, that's all I'm going to say.
