red screen of death –
I have 3 PS3 with RSOD and, like many, tried all possible solutions to resolve the problem. I've read almost everything about it on the internet. I agree in part that the problem seems to be in NAND Flash, however, do not understand why, several lucky people reported that after RSOD have occurred, your PS3 to function normally again? This is really possible, considering that the problem was in NAND?!
Sorry for the mistakes, this is not my native language!
I believe its because sometimes this error shows up also for corrupted harddrive or bad settings of some sort. But some unlucky people like me have it showing up due to some other hardware fault and possibly bad nand flash?
I will be reflowing this board soon (CPU/GPU/SB/NAND CHips etc..) to see what happens.
Any news ?
My company has been working with it for about 2 months now, no dice.
A friend of mine had this happen just the other day. He was smart about it and got it resolved.
He attempted every option in recovery menu. Nothing.
He even took out hdd and slapped it another system, formatted and placed it back into red screen console.... Nothing.
this indicated that it was a hardware failure. so this is what he did.
he called sony and explained what happened. they said it was going to have to be serviced and would cost $150. he then politely claimed that he could not afford anymore money into his system since this was his 4th purchased console since launch. they placed him on hold and when the returned they said they spoke to a manager and agreed to repair system for free for that one time only.
problem resolved.... $0 out of pocket. all because he was polite about it.

This is an extreme longshot, but any chance that the PS3Jailbreak could potentially be used to reflash the NAND assuming that the chip isn't just bad, but just has a major error on it.
I doubt it would, but can't hurt to get another opinion.
Pretty good idea. No scratch that... damn good idea.

MAN I WOULD APRICIATE THAT INFO
I GOT THIS SURFING FOR SOME IDEAS ON HOW TO FIX THAT ISSUE IFOUND THIS
Since the 2.5 update the PS3 has a Recovery menu with the following options:
* Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
* Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
* Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
* Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
* Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
* System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System
How to get access to service mode
1. Make sure the PS3 is turned off,
2. Press and hold the power button on the PS3 it will power on then power off.
3. When it's off press and hold the power button again until you hear two consecutive beeps.
4. It will ask for the controller to be connected via the USB cable,
5. Turn on the controller and you will have access to the menu.
NO RSOD BUT CANT FINISH INSTALING THE FIRMWARE KEEPS GIVING ME ERROR 8002F14E
