Got a system tonight and it have me stumped cause this is really new to me.
the customer said he played uncharted 2 on his 40gb and all of a sudden the console freeze.....when he turn it off and turn it back on....he got a red screen saying a fatal error has occurred.....WTF?

I hope it is nothing hardware and software related cause that will take me weeks to repair (praying it will be software related)

    So....anyone have ideas?
GaryOpa....can you help a brother out?

I believe I heard of this before. I have the 80 GB Core (No PS2 Backwards Compatibility) so I never encountered it. There is either two things you can do:

    1 - Rebuild the System's Database.

2 - You'll have to pay Sony $150.00 (If you have no warranty) to have it repaired/replaced with another 40GB.

(How to get access to service mode

    1. Make sure the PS3 is turned off,
    2. Press and hold the power button on the PS3 it will power on then power off.
    3. When it's off press and hold the power button again until you hear two consecutive beeps.
    4. It will ask for the controller to be connected via the USB cable,
    5. Turn on the controller and you will have access to the menu.)

Well so far I have seen two of these machines, with this new RED SCREEN OF DEATH, telling the owner to phone Sony.

But both machines were not left in my hands long enough to do a full diag.

Service mode works, all 6 functions on service mode works, but system still displays Red screen, on normal reboot.

So far I have tried different hard drives, even updating the system to latest firmware v3.01 works using an USB stick, but still RED screen on reboot.

Two things left which I have not been able to try, remove the internal battery, short out the controller setting ram, and see if I clears the error.

Do a normal proper reflow of the board as if it was the YLOD error.

Me thinks Sony has changed the system nand recently to be able to display his RED SCREEN when an error has occured like the original YLOD error, to stop people from doing reflows, and to force them to paid Sony's high price.

Much like M$ has in the recent past, to change all the systems to display E74 error instead of the "3 red lights" / "ring-of-death". -- But that after a while hit M$ back in the face with egg, and they were forced to extend the 3 year warranty to cover their new E74 error screen.

well i tried the update with USB....that didn't even work...still got slapped in the face with the RSOD.....i'll probably try the reflow AND the battery removal and controller shorting technique.
Thanks Gary....i'll report to you soon......

No, he was just a spammer/troll. The PS3 isn't even hacked (yet). If people (myself included) has/have a PS2 FMCB, we would have gotten a similar error.

The 20GB/40GB/60GB/Old 80GB W/ 4 USB Ports are well known to this problem (and other problems like the infamous Yellow Light of Death.)
