rebug 3.7 spoof

First and foremost I have posted a lot of questions recently regarding different firmware and copying problems. With the help of joining this excellent forum all of my problems have been solved, kudos to the many wonderful and helpful people involved with this site. I have spent my entire day today installing cfw 3.55 kmeaw and am ready for new challenges. My question is does anyone know exactly what this "spoof" is? It says it wont copy 3.7 games so what is it for, is it just for playing 3.7 games on lower firmware so we don't have to upgrade? ( I am slowly getting used to different methods of backing up and running homebrew apps such as paintown and ps3sx on 3.55 instead of 3.41) Is rebug a completely different cfw?

Im sure it just makes the ps3 think its on the latest firmware when really it is not.
But this will only allow the machine not to update it will not allow games that require 3.70 to work.

Just to add to this, it makes the ps3 think it's running the latest firmware so you can't accidentally update by putting in a game/running code that requires a higher firmware version than 3.55.
