Please don't compare the Warez Scene to the real PS3 scene because this is the reason SONY is after all the hacker in the first place.

The real PS3 scene had something real going on. Something legitimately good. Like Open Source software, it was a movement.

The problem is the rest of the population, people who don't give a fuk about the meaning of hacking the PS3 and jailbreaking it. They think it is some dorky lonely hacker trying to do it to fight the MAN and corporations so he can play free games. Some CSI bullshit where they show the hackers trying to break a bank in a dark room with 20 computer screens. No, it was never about that.

Just read Gran_C, he has been saying that the Sony lawyers think he has a vendetta against SONY which is quite the opposite. Just the knowledge drives him. Everyone thinks jailbreaking a PS3 is easy because all the work has already done for them. People are downloading his HV bible and they are not even looking at all of his hard work! It is absolutely amazing.

This was supposed to OPEN the PS3. Just like the iPhone jailbreak scene, it was to open the platform to anyone with the knowledge and passion to code bring real change to the PS3.

Just imagine all the possibilities. If the PS3 was OPEN like how fail0verflow wanted it. We could have all this software that the people want. NTFS on PS3, XBMC, Server software, multiple PS3 farm support.

Just think of Watson on Jeopardy. That was built on the same platform that the PS3 comes from. The possibilities are limitless.

SONY just doesn't get it. Long live hackers.

I think once the dust settles down, we'll see people making more use out of Graf's work. Not to mention, the PSLight SDK keeps getting new additions to it every day. Soon enough it will be on par w/ the actual PS3 SDK, and a lot more will get accomplished as there will be comments and info of how to program for the SDK (which if you've ever played w/ the official SDK, it's pretty difficult to program w/ as there just isn't much info out there of how to use it). The scene is still in it's infancy. I also believe we'll see something very similar to xbins very shortly. That way all of these programs that could be considered circumvention programs, backup loaders, etc, will have a new private place to be hosted and hopefully in a country that doesn't have laws against such things. I'm just sitting back and watching the drama unfold, and I hope soon enough something exciting will happen.

I fail to see how having 20 computer screens in a dark room means you have it out for the corporations. Each to their own perspective though I suppose.

That is something hollywood invented. It's basically FUD. It's just like "dropping the soap in prison." It's a technique to bring fear into people. People who are dumb and just don't understand. They get scared with this stuff. Just like all the manager at SONY.

I just want people to understand who just learned about PS3 hacking that it's not about the free games. It's about opening the PS3 to allow the customer to do what we want it with it. Developers are being hunted with Sony gestapo bullshit, and that is just wrong.

I have already had before a 2 year fight over the original xbox and emulators so I know the truth about these big corporations they really are upset over the "homebrew" and open source of info that is why you see the direct attacks and lawsuits and takedown notices!

The reason the pc "scene" groups are still around us it is just plain stupid pirated warez with few changes to get around copy protection!

Unlike the ps3 which is tons of info allowing one to bypass everything and produce your own game or emulator if 360 had the same open source of a public Sdk and possible homebrew you would see same type of crackdown!

I leave this topic open for a bit but it will get closed as sadly topics like this turn quickly into a flamewar and trolling and mudslinging so that the reason why the other thread was removed!

Sony has shareholders as a publicly shared company and as such must take steps to protect its revenue sources. But beyond the dollars and cents arguement it is also the corporate culture of Sony. A corporation takes on almost a mind state with its employees after a time. Corporate culture can be illustrated in this example, how often do you hear "it's how things are done here." Sony clearly has the mindset of severe protectionism and isoloation of its products in order to ensure its ability to control its corporate startegy. I believe Sony responded so angrily against hackers because 1) easy target with bad press (20 screens in the basement) 2) The loss of control over the ps3, psp, and blu ray technology is jepordizing its projected revenue, and as Sony would have borrowed probally for R&D it resulted in a projected unexpected revenue loss that would reduce profits for repayments on the R&D as well as divends for its shareholders, lowering the share price, reducing capital. It has a snowball effect depeding on a corporations accounting practices. As Sony is a publicly shared company we could take a look at their books, but I'm not interested enough to do it. But my belief is it is a dollar and cents issue more than anything, but most of my education is in biz, so usually i precieve things because in this manner because it is easiest for me to breakdown and understand.

It is real unfortunate that SONY is going after the developers like this. I have no idea how they found out who Gran_C was IRL. It must have suck to wake up and be treated like a terrorist surrounded by the police like he was.

I know that keeping a platform closed is good for the mind of the shareholders but it's a business that should be stopped. Customers deserve more rights as we are the one who actually have to work hard and pay for these gadgets. It have proven to work too! iPhones are open and they are selling like hot cakes!

Sony says that the PS3 does everything as with its current marketing campaign promotes but in reality it doesn't really does everything. It just plays what Sony decides what it wants to, and not what you want to. Sure, it is a game console but it is marketed as a computer, all in one system.

But to be honest, it is just another Sony lie. First are the constant updates that don't add anything. Then it's the lack of support for main technologies. MKV files can be played in other Sony products like their blurays but it has yet or will never be implemented for the PS3.

And, finally comes Linux. If I remember correctly, the only reason Linux was included was not to stop the hackers but it was to get the PS3 classified as a computer instead of a game console in Europe so Sony wouldn't pay a custom tax.

Now, really smart people opened the system. We can implement what Sony was falling behind. Most of us are no threat to the business. Killzone will make a gazillion dollars even if it get pirated. If it's interesting and good, it will make money. But, Sony went off and sued anyone and threaten even legal action to customers who don't know the existence that the PS3 has been hacked.

In the end hackers need end user like us to stand up and say enough is enough. We can't just keep doing business as usual because in the end the world that we created, the world that we open, is going to crumble under our feet if we let Sony continue pushing us around.

Yes, most of us are content with backups but that's not good enough. We need more and if Sony gets away with pushing people like Gran_C and geoHot around then they will win and we will lose.

The problem at times is percieved value and the need to maintain this. For example long ago I was at a resort for a biz conference in the tropics. Nice place but one of the guys attending wanted to stay longer in the off season and tried to get a discounted rate. The hotel would rather have the room stay empty that lose the percieved value by offering a discount. He couldn't understand it, but I do.

Honestly if it wasn't for jailbreaks and hacks and mods I wouldn't own a console system. I rarely play console games. But I love new devices that have been modified. So every hacked system I've bought, and I've bought the supported devices such as the eyetoy and eyetoy controllers, the xbox kinect, the xbox wireless headset, and the wii light guns and racing wheels (get the guns, not the wheels as they are uncomfortable to use). So that is money from me that Sony, MS, and Nintendo would never get from me if their system was not comprimised. I understand the arguement that many consoles are sold at a loss but other than the Wii (the only system not sold at a loss at the start of its sales life) I bought all my consoles later on in their life after a hack emerged. At the later point of a products life manufacturing should be cheaper so I believe I bought all systems after the point of profit for the manufacturers. Profit again these companies would never see if they had not had their consoles hacked.

But corporations usually employee traditional methods to caluculate losses and profits before accounting. So stats are used to project estimated results. So if the average console owner buys 5 games, and I buy less than 5, jailbreaking must hurt profits right? Because clearly i would have bought 5 games if the console had not been hacked.

One thing that occurred to me is that the NGP is coming out soon, they will obviously want to have the same if not more connectivity between the PS3 & NGP that they had with the PSP.

The client (aka PSP) has been hacked since the start but wasnt useful hacking the PS3.
Now the Host(PS3) is blown open it has allowed us to pseudo sign apps for the PSP.

I'm not saying it will be the same for the NGP, however having the host (PS3) at our mercy would make any communications from the NGP vulnerable.
Who knows, the Xperia may also have connectivity to the PS3 which would leave it vulnerable to.
