questons on jailbreaking ofw 4.31 and fail0verflow

sry for my bad english, its not my native language.

ive done a lot of reading about the ps3 scene and im trying to understand some things.
why is it not possible to install a modified 4.31 (aka cfw) on 3.56+ consoles?
i thought with the last optained (leaked) lv0 keys it is possible to break the chain of trust very early? or what did sony change then?

my second question is about the fail0verflow presentation on the 27c3.
what did they exactly exploit and what was their entry point?
did their work base on geohots work?
