Questions about OFW 4.25
Hello PSX-Scene community,
First, I'd like to preface my questions with something. Despite being a brand new member to this community, I have been involved in other similar communities in the past. Although I know relatively nothing about PS3 Jailbreaks, I am rather familiar with getting support online. I know how crazy it drives people when you ask a question in a thread that could have been solved with a simple google search. I've spent upwards of four hours google searching, and delving through the comments on the home page here...but some questions I just couldn't find the answers to. If you could help me, that would be greatly appreciated.
A little bit of an overview of my console:
Old fat CECHKxx Model
Alright, so here's my thoughts. I was on reddit, where a comment was made about the PS3 LV0 keys being released, and it being a rather big deal. I decided to hop on google, and see if I could find anything out. I quickly ran across the 'Rogero CEX-4.21 CFW' post on the homepage. I read it all, and saw update #2; which mentions the 4.25 - 3.55 downgrader pup. Naturally, I was incredibly excited. I hadn't been running a CFW for a LONG time, and this looked like my chance to get back on the scene. Just before I started, I saw all of the people freaking out about bricks. Naturally, I held off for a while until I saw the post today mentioning that it appeared that the oldest fat models were in the clear. YAY! Anyway, I got that little pup in my flash drive, threw it into the ps3, tried to install it........nope! I got hit in the face with a 'corrupt' error. I've checked the file hashes, and they are all in the clear. As I read the second update about it a little closer, I saw that it's only intended to be used for the Rogero CFW 4.21.
My first question is: Am I right in assuming that the 4.25 to 3.55 downgrader is only intended for Rogero CFW 4.21 users? So this will not work on OFW 4.25, correct?
Secondly: Assuming that is true, what are my options for downgrading my PS3? I've read about tools like E3 working. Is there any other options besides a hardware modification?
And finally: Is there any work currently on software methods to downgrade/jailbreak OFW 4.25 or above going on?
If you've made it this far, THANK YOU! From what I've seen, PSX-Scene is the go to place for PS3 Jailbreaking; so I figure this is my best bet and finding some answers.
You need a hardware flasher to downgrade.
As far as I know, there is no one working on a software only solution.
Crap! Those little suckers are expensive!
From what I've been able to gather, the LV0 news by itself won't be able to help anyone above 3.55 OFW. To do that, someone would have to find yet another vulnerability. I realize that you probably won't know the answer, but will having the access to the LV0 give us a greater likelihood to find more vulnerabilities? Or are we still looking at relatively she same situation?
Having access to the LV0 keys will help. Developers can now decrypt these new firmwares and start the task of finding weaknesses and bugs. It's a good thing.
Excellent. So there is a little glimmer of hope for me, and the rest of the suckers who updated past 3.55. :D I'm thinking I'll hold off on splurging on a hardware flasher for a while then. It makes sense to me that with the LV0 keys that they would be able to have a better understanding of the system, but it worries me that nobody (that you know of) is working on it. Given the fact that there is another alternative (although a fairly expensive one), I'm pretty worried about the priority this will be for Devs in general. We'll see though. Thanks for your help, indirect76.
For people just jumping in, between what I've learned here and elsewhere, here is the answers to the questions from the start of the thread.
1) Am I right in assuming that the 4.25 to 3.55 downgrader is only intended for Rogero CFW 4.21 users? So this will not work on OFW 4.25, correct?
Answer: YES. The 4.25 Downgrader is only to be used on Rogero CFW 4.21 consoles. It will not work on anything else, and you are asking for a brick.
2) Assuming that is true, what are my options for downgrading my PS3? I've read about tools like E3 working. Is there any other options besides a hardware modification?
Answer: The only option for consoles on 3.56+ is a hardware flasher. These will only work for certain consoles, as newer consoles left the factory with a newer OFW than 3.55. There are no software only solutions at the moment.
3) Is there any work currently on software methods to downgrade/jailbreak OFW 4.25 or above going on?
Answer: Unfortunately, no one that we know of. The good news is that LV0 keys being in the wild should help a bit. The LV0 keys themselves will not help jailbreak OFW 3.56+, but it should make finding the vulnerabilities needed to do so a bit easier. Still, that may never happen.
Final verdict: For now, newer consoles have one option. Sit and wait. Us with older consoles have the option of buying hardware flashers to downgrade our consoles to a lower firmware. If you are looking for a free way to jailbreak your console, it's time to play the waiting game!
If you really want a hackable system, there may be some on eBay. Also there is a buy/sell/trade section on this site.
Also, the fact that I don't know of any software downgrade projects means zip. I am not exactly on the loop when it comes to upcoming project, and the scene tends to be secretive.
As much as I want to hack my system, breaking open the big black box makes me incredibly nervous. Software flashing itself makes me pretty nervous, but when we start talking hardware....well, it's just not a good thing. :p
Yeah, I took your advice with a grain of salt. I know that scenes like this tend to be really secretive when it comes to these kinds of things. I figure it's a result of the cross team competition in conjunction with keeping things secret from Sony until the time to use them. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask. :) It seems just about every site has its own opinion on what LV0 means for us, so I don't think anyone really knows for certain just yet. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. :)
