I was wondering, what exactly does the PS3UPDAT file inside the PS3_UPDATE folder do? Because I've recently discovered that backups will run just fine without it.

i think it's the (optional) firmware update that comes with the Game

so, if a game needs you to be on FW 3.55, they ship the update with the game. especially for those people, who haven't connected the PS3 to the internet.

you can safely delete those, yes
