question about e3 flahser without station

so i was thinking about buying the e3 flasher but the one without esata station.
so...my question is can i downgrade without the use of an hdd on the ps3?
and if i can, on what step am i supposed to take the e3 flasher out and put the hdd back.

PS. I've looked over google about this question and i've read that i dont need an hdd to read/write the nor but my main concern is the part of taking the e3 out and inserting the hdd back.

I did it like this. You need to get the HDD back after you flash back the patched NOR dump.
