ps3 stole my gigs –
01-24-2011,12:21 PM
installed a 640gb drive in my slim, told me to install FW, did that, formatted the drive and showing 536GB free out of 596GB.
so basically nothing on the hdd and it just stole 70GB, that cant be right. i know it did the same with the original 120GB but only 20Gb was allocated for seemingly nothing

Yep, PS3 doesn't take a fixed value in GB but a percentage of HDD disk space for himself...

There's two factors at work here:
1) Drive manufacturers use different math to calculate the 640GB capacity of your drive than the PS3 does. That explains the 640GB vs 596GB portion.
2) The PS3 automatically reserves a percentage of your hard drive and doesn't let you use it. It's around 10% I think. That explains the 596GB vs 536GB portion.

Yes it's right, it takes 10-12% for itself. Sure it's too much on larger drives but I really doubt sony care at all.

i put in a 500gb the other day. right off the bat it said something like 446 out of 485gb free space. that is bullshit. but its a hell of alot better than an 80gig

Well my PS3 stole 52GB from 750GB so it's not a big deal.
Just that you know, because your PS3 slim doesn't have 16MB, the firmware is saved on the HDD taking more space from your HDD than on an old model.

yeah but still 20-30gb fine, 70gb is ridiculous and firmware wont be much more than 256mb anyway.
hopefully someone will hackfix that hehe
