How long will the laser last in the PS3 slim?
Certainly it would depend on how much someone uses it. Should i be concerned the laser will stop working? I have 10 games I have been ripping to my HD and I watch lots of movies.

I replace tons of lasers each week.
From the looks of it, lasers will last at least 2 1/2 to 3 years under NORMAL daily usage!
As for ripping games, that might DECREASE the life of the laser.
Blu-Ray lasers are much like a lightblub, they have a limited number of hours then they burn out.
But Sony has been improving the design.
The early ones 400a were bad, 99% of them have died by now.
The later 410a (dual-eye) used in since the launch of MetalGearSolid, are better design, and seem to last longer.
The Slim 450a (smaller of course), seem to be the same as the 410a, just a little smaller, I have personally only see TWO dead ones, and one was because the system was throw a very long distance before landing very hard.
It is still too early to know for sure in answering your questions.
hmm.. ok so i have an 80gb Model with the Dual Shock Controls, which laser would I have?
The easy way to tell what type of laser you have without opening, is to watch how the disc loads/goes into your unit.
If the disc goes straight in, gets pulled from each side evenly, then you have the older (single-eye / 400a) laser system.
If the disc goes on a curve, turns slowly as it gets in by only one side, then you have the newer (dual-eye / 410a) laser system.
