PS3 Red Screen After 3.55.3 REBUG, No Recovery, Just Petitboot
So I recently installed 3.55.3 REBUG over my 3.55 KMEAW. Honestly, I can't tell you why... I remember loading up a game with PSN + 4.31 Spoof Enabler loaded(REBUG's spoofer doesn't work for some reason and always get asked for an update). My PS3 froze loading, I believe it was RE6, restarted it, and that's when the red screen about a serious error occurred.
So, I figured, "Okay, I'll just boot up into Recovery and install 3.55 over again," but every time I try to get into Recovery, I get this weird black screen instead that says "Petitboot" with options like "Exit to XMB," and something about "GameOS." I have no idea what Petitboot is, but it seems to be blocking me from gaining access to Recovery.
So my question is, how can I get my PS3 back to being usable? How do I get rid of whatever this Petitboot thing is? I just want to try to get access to Recovery and reinstall either KMEAW or REBUG. Please help? Thank you.
FIX FOR THIS ISSUE AND SIMILAR ISSUES
Symptom #1: Trying to load into XMB leaves you with a red screen with many different languages saying that your PS3 is suffering from a serious issue.
Symptom #2: You can't log into your Recovery menu because you still get the red screen.
Symptom #3: You can't log into your Recovery menu because you've had Petitboot or a similar program installed, and it is blocking your access to Recovery and rebooting you back to XMB instead, causing the red screen error to appear over and over again.
Step #1: As you try to boot into Recovery, you're presented with the Petitboot screen from Symptom #3, so connect a keyboard to the PS3 via USB and scroll to the last option that allows you to exit the menu.
Step #2: The menu for Petitboot exits, but returns you back into the XMB and the red screen from Symptom #1 is back.
Step #3: Now, shut down the system and try rebooting into Recovery again. You'll notice that Petitboot isn't loading anymore, but now you are seeing the same red screen from Symptom #1 appear inside the Recovery menu instead of the XMB.
Step #4: Once you've accessed the red screen within the Recovery menu, this is where it gets a little tricky; hold the power button down completely until the system shuts down.
Step #5: Once the system is shut down, hold the power button to boot into Recovery... and this time you should hear the double beeps. Once you hear the double beeps, let go and you should now have finally reached your Recovery menu. This may take a few tries to do properly. (Step #4 & #5 may take a few tries)
Step #6: Connect a USB external HDD with the OFW 3.55 PUP inside the PS3>Update folder.
Step #7: Go to the very last option in Recovery to do a System Update and let it do its thing, following the on-screen prompts.
Step #8: You'll eventually be booted back into your XMB with everything still intact.
Step #9: Consider yourself finished... unless you also have Petitboot installed, then see the next few steps below. If you don't have Petitboot installed, then install your CFW of choice and have fun.
Step #10: To erase Petitboot, we're going to have to format the PS3's HDD in Full Format, not Quick. This will take over 9 hours, and you will lose all of your files, so leave it on overnight, or while you're out.
Step #11: Once you've got a completely clean PS3 system, simply install a CFW of your choice and you're done, but I hope you saved all your PSN games and save data. You're going to probably have quite a bit of reinstalling to do as well.
