Currently in order to keep from being banned i took my ps3 offline and banned its mac address from my router

however id like to install ubuntu on it and that supposedly requires an internet connection, not to mention i would like to be able to stream stuff to it from my computer, ftp, etc etc

    so heres the question then:

can you block the ps3 from talking to sony while still having it online?

to clarify i dont care about trying to get on psn, but i read that the ps3 automatically sends data to sony as soon as its turned on and has a connection, id like to block this from happening while still being able to connect to my ps3 from my other computers or even the internet

block these servers by whatever method you choose. this blocks PSN and still allows for full internet access including game patches.

    auth.np.ac.playstation.net
    np.stun.playstation.net
    ena.net.playstation.net
    ps3.update.playstation.net
    service.playstation.net
    creepo.ww.hl.playstation.net
    np.community.playstation.net
    manuals.playstation.net

so if you dont mind me asking where did that list come from? has someone watched network traffic on a ps3 and those are all the places it tries to contact? do we have any idea if basically blocking *.playstation.net will prevent a console from being banned even if its online? (by online i mean on the internet not on psn, i dont care about psn but would like to avoid being banned if possible)

these addresses were obtained through reverse proxy research through charles. by blocking the above servers, your ps3 cannot phone home... (as far as anyone knows)

*.playstation.net will work. but then you will not be able to get game patches.

original thread is here ---> http://psx-scene.com/forums/f189/how...-banned-81285/ (How to keep full Internet access while blocking Sony to avoid getting banned.)
