Hello all, long term lurker who's finally decided to pulling the trigger on picking up a PS3 specifically to jailbreak it. However, I was wondering what model of PS3 I could pick up in New condition that would have a firmware prior to 3.56 installed onto it. I was assuming that it would be any of the out of production ones, but I just wanted to double check with the community where the cutoff was in terms of getting an easy to mod console.
If you can find an unopened 120gb slim it should be at 3.50 or under, but try and get it from a place you can return it to because theres no guarantee, I've bought 3 120gb slims the last 6 months and they've been at 3.21 to 3.41
Is there any other way to identify ? Like the model no. CECH - 2XXX !!
I'm planning to pick up one nxt month, and I don't want to buy a wrong one and regret.
Slim 120GB is surely ok but i doubt you'll find them right on the shelves .
One clue of firmware is the game included in the package . All the following games require 3.55 or less , if you find a package with that game it will be moddable

Why are 120GB slims always going to have firmware > 3.5? Will any Playstation model (slim or non-slim) put out before the 120GB slim be fine, or is this exclusive to the 120gb slim?
I'm asking all of these questions because I'm a poor college student, and I probably won't be buying my PS3 in a bundle unless I find it for really cheap at some store. I've already ruled out buying a used or preowned one because it will have probably already been upgraded, and I'm assuming that if it's new than it hasn't been touched since it left Sony's distribution centers.
120gb/250gb model was discontinued, and the 160gb/320gb model took its place before firmware 3.50 was released.Quote:

The brand new CECH-25xx (160/320gb) made before 2011 will have 3.55 or lower. Avoid 25xx made after 2011, and all CECH-30xx.
what does 40nm RSX as opposed to 65nm for the 20xx mean?
It means the console runs cooler (making it last longer) and needs less power to function.Quote:

I'm extremely grateful for everyone that's replied to this thread, especially Pereb27, billpine, flo, and Shaitan, and so far I've come to the conclusion that:
1. Do not buy a 160GB/320GB slim.
2. Any 120GB/250GB slim is okay.
However, one thing that I feel has been overlooked is the non-slim models of PS3. So, are all the non-slim models safe?
