PS3 Lagging Horribly In Games And Menu's, Is It CFW or PS3?
PS3 Lagging Horribly In Games And Menu's, Is It CFW or PS3? –
01-10-2012,05:31 PM
I recently jailbroke my PS3 and flashed it to Kmeaw 3.55. Everything worked fine until I installed Rebug 3.55.2 and then upgraded it to 3.55.6. It didn't start right away but my PS3 is getting slower and slower. To the point where sound is skipping badly in games (unplayable) and games themselves will freeze for a few seconds at a time preventing the controller from accessing the PS button menu or controlling the onscreen game. Any chance this has something to do with Rebug or CFW in general? I am not using any memory intensive themes (if that is even possible). Just the stock PS3 XMB menu. Any feedback or thoughts would be most appreciated!
UPDATE
Alright this is what I have tried so far:
1) Recovery Menu - Rebuild Database
2) Recovery Menu - Restore File System
3) XMB Menu - Restore Default Settings
4) Switch back to 3.55 OFW (no change in menu lag, in game sound lag, in game random freeze lag)
5) Upgrade to Kamea 3.55 (problems persist)
6) Back to 3.55 OFW and then upgrade to Rebug 3.55.2 (problems persist)
7) Upgraded to Rebug 3.55.6 (package install, not a firmware upgrade) (problems persist)
8) Use Rebug Selector and tried both Normal and Rebug options under Mode Select. I've tried both Retail and Debug for XMB Select.
The scary thing is that my problem is getting worse and its happening fast. This morning I could start up Gatling Gears and it played just fine while sitting at the start screen. This evening I tried loading that game and the sound and game are skipping so bad, just sitting at the start screen, that I have to shut the game down. There is no hope of it working. It is worth noting that no games seem to be working correctly. I added MotorStorm Apocalypse to the game directory and Multiman isn't picking it up. It looks the same as the latest Mortal Kombat and Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, both of which are detected and start up fine. Motorstorm doesn't even show up in the menu.
My XMB menu and PS3 are lagged horribly. This is not just games that are affected. The system takes a long time just to start. After it starts it takes an additional one minute for the menu items to appear. After selecting a game I wait up to 30 seconds before it even switches from the XMB screen to the black screen you see when its loading a game or app. I had to disable my multiman theme because it has music and that music just wont stop skipping now (note that it was playing just fine up to a week ago). I am using around 130GB of my 300GB PS3. If a PS3 is anything like a computer I would think I was witnessing low memory issues. The fact that the menu's alone don't work properly shows that something bigger than a poorly programmed game slowing things down.
At this point I don't know what to do. Should I just try and format and reinstall the OS? Does anybody think that would be worth the time invested? Someone mentioned to me that I could try using an external HD to try and see if my internal hard drive was to blame. Would that involved installing the PS3 OS on it or are we just talking about game storage or? I'm out of ideas and options. Any feedback, suggestions, or thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Did you enable Debug mode with Rebug Selector 1.6?

I was in Debug mode for most of the time I've been using Rebug. A couple of days ago I switched over to Retail because in Debug mode the Media Server setting is disabled each time you power off the PS3. I use my PS3 a lot for media streaming and it was getting tiresome to keep re-enabling the option. Do you think switching back to Debug would fix my lag problem? Today is much worse performance wise than yesterday was. Whatever the problem is it seems to be getting worse.

I just know that you need to enable Debug mode for multiMAN to load games properly. Could be your problem.

Which games are affected. There are known issues with some games with the sound/skipping issue like the Uncharted series that can be fixed with PSARC. Are you having this trouble with all games? with disc games?

Restore File Structure / Recovery Menu (if that don't work try the Database or HDD is going out)

CECHA01 (500GB [1TB ext.]REBUG 4.21.2(REX)/Cobra 4.30CFW(v6.0)/QA Flagged

Maybe is a hardware problem, it happened to me once, my ps3 was very slow, first I though it was the cfw but after I reinstalled everything I discovered that the problem was my external hard drive, I droped it some days before and apparently it broke (it took a while to even show any signs of malfunctioning, thatīs why at first I suspected it was a sofware problem) , so my ps3 was trying to load the games and was so slow because it couln`t load them properly anymore

sounds like hard drive failure. If you're getting lag just booting up your ps3, I don't think there could be much you could do to try to fix it other than backing up whatever you can to your pc then formatting your drive from the recovery menu. I would suggest if you have access to a usb enclosure to let your pc delete the partition and create a new unformatted partition before your ps3 formats because the ps3 doesn't always format the entire drive. This way it would make your hard drive new again if it's a simple matter of damaged sectors. I've seen it skip your os section which would probably be a problem for you. Do you hear any grinding or weird noises coming from your hard drive? If it sounds like it's dragging when spinning, then there's a way to free it up by removing the cover of the drive and gently spinning the disc inside with a clean cloth over your finger. I'm not going to tell you how to do that. It is something that you should read up on yourself and make sure you fully understand what to do and the risks involved. If you do it wrong, you'll kill your drive and it is sometimes nearly impossible to repair if you do. By all means try backing up and formatting first and if your problem is a freezing/frozen hard drive then it may just be easier for you to replace it. You can get a 1 Terabyte for around $100 and smaller drives for much less.
